Red Bug weaves win in feature as outsiders rule again

By: Goldie Boy   February 21 , 2017

The western India trainer`s, Vinay Lagad`s 7/1 chance, Red Bug (apprentice Hindu Singh-up), landed a quiet gamble in the 1,200m Capt. H.D. Fownes Memorial Cup, on Tuesday. Red Bug landed the trophy after a close contest, with Shafiq Khan filly, Sweet Stone (app. Ranidan Singh) while the major contribution towards the victory of five-year-old horse came from the solidly wagered Tangaloomaa`s apprentice, N.B. Kuldeep, also from western India. Tangalooma not only banged the right gate at the start, she also took a fly jump-out, and thus going out of contention, right there.

The afternoon was, in fact, an extension of last Saturday`s race card as a number of long-priced winners continued to deal blows, one after another, leaving the sizeable week-day crowd chant, fowl play.

It was trainer Vijay Singh`s Half Volley (S. John) who attracted almost an equal support with Tangaloomaa in the betting but the former never posed as a threat, during the race, to Red Bug who, in the company of Sweet Stone chased the early leader Mind Of Madness (app. R.S. Bhati) till about a furlong from the winning post. The two horses fought a grim battle inside the final 100m but the Lady Luck smiled on the gambled runner.

Half-an-hour later, it was the turn of another quietly fancied runner, No More Politics (Sandeep Rajput) to show his mettle in the 2,000m Aloritz Handicap. The Vikash Jaiswal-trained horse, though long in the tooth, gave a good galloping lesson to his younger rivals to win with a degree of comfort from Romantic Magic (John) -- a 5/2 joint-favourite with Santero (C. Alford) who finished in the ruck after showing some urgency in the early half of the race. No More Politics was ridden well off the pace till the final turn while Santero and The Big Bull called the shots. Given the reins in the home stretch, the 10-year-old simply cantered home like a bubbly youngster.

The day`s opener, served the deadliest blow to the punters when trainer Rutherford Alford`s literally justified the racing adage, a bolt from the blue. The seven-year-old mare also came from well off the pace, in the company of Saudagar (Vinay Jaiswal), to force a camera-verdict in his favour, and also for the maiden victory of her apprentice Sujit Kumar Paswan.

The rest of the card was dominated by favourites, totalling three, who delivered the goods but their expanding odds did keep their backers at the tenterhooks.

Trainer Arti Doctor`s Flamsteed (Alford), for instance, opened as an even-money favourite but went to the start at 2`s in the 1,400m Beat The Distance Handicap. The top-weighted runner, a bleeder, however, cantered home untroubled to the relief of his backers.

Raunak Banerji`s Aberfan (Alford), on the other hand, shared favouritism with Vikash`s top-weighted disaster named Mariska (app. Nikhil Naidu) in the 1,400m Aristotle Handicap. The a western India migrant, however, failed to match strides with the joint-favourite, Aberfan who made his own running to a facile four-length victory.

Trainer Vijay Singh`s Nashvilletennessee`s increasing odds also caused worry, and truly, jockey S. John had to use all tricks up his sleeves to counter trainer Javed Khan`s last outing convincing winner`s, Baccardi`s challenge to drive home to victory in the 1,200m Punters Delight Handicap. Trainer Shyam Habbu`s Fire Falcon (Vinay Jaiswal), seeking a back-to-back victory, was a bottled up third in the same race.
