Downton Abbey wins final day’s feature

By: Stay Thirsty   February 22 , 2017

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Downton Abbey won the concluding day`s feature of the Mysore Winter Season by getting the better of one-time rousing performer Pentagram to claim the 1200 metres Aandolana Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the highest rated event of the long-drawn card of 11 events that were gone through on Wednesday. Mysore-based Ascendent won the Kunigal Stud Gold Cup 2017, a rich terms race of first season runners, the other highlight of the day.

The authorities who generally restrict the number of races per day are very generous in permitting long, unwieldy cards if it were to be the final day of the season. Even the professionals who otherwise would have taken things easy, enter their horses as if there is no tomorrow. This was the reason why there was a card of 11 events and in such a scenario when quite a few horses are due for retirement and others feeling the strain of running at frequent intervals at a centre like Mysore, the form is bound to prove difficult to fathom and upsets would be par for such a race day. In races for horses in he higher category, there was a semblance of order but punters suffered from the onslaught of long shots in quite a few races.

Mysore racing was free of serious mishaps for jockeys in the last couple of seasons. Unfortunately, there was a serious accident during the running of the fourth race, Ellora Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Skyfullofstars with season`s successful jockey Sai Vamshi astride, came down approaching the final bend, resulting in two other jockeys being thrown off their horses. Santosh Kumar on Lucky Emerald and apprentice jockey Shivpoojan on Accuracy were all victims of the accident. While Sai Vamshi suffered a collar bone fracture, Santosh Kumar escaped with minor bruises. The inexperienced Shivpoojan bore the brunt of the fall, suffering serious head injuries and is battling a critical condition. The race itself was won by the longest priced horse Quick Angel who held off Gran Turismo, Felix Legion and Kir Royale. The tote returned a dividend of Rs 1086 on a ten-rupee ticket on the Bangalore tote. The lower division of the race also was won by another Feroz Khan trained Counter Point who was fancied to win. Counter Point, in the hands of jockey Shoban Babu, had no problem in disposing of Ruthba and Time To Time to land the spoils at good odds.

Coming back to the Aandolana Trophy, the race saw Bangalore-based Downton Abbey receiving strong support to build on the good run that the five-year-old mare had been enjoying at her home centre. Pentagram was once a top-notch performer but of late, has been struggling having lost his sharpness. Jockey Arshad Alam had Pentagram lead from the start but closer home was strongly challenged by Downton Abbey who came up with a late burst and overhauled the front-runner with ease. Scrip Writer showed some spark over the shorter sprint by finishing third.

Monnappa trained Ascendent proved that he is the best three-year-old now stationed in Mysore when he recorded a decisive win over Bangalore challenger Sea King to win the 1400 metres Kunigal Stud Gold Cup 2017, a race for three-year-olds which offered rich stakes for a race of this nature. Sea King was firmly backed to win but the favourite was found wanting in the end. Ascendent who was none too well placed from the start, gracing the rear, improved position on the wide outside and despite this apparent discomfort, the lesser fancied runner from Mysore came into the reckoning on the wide outside and stormed clear of Sea King inside the final 100 metres. Sadeek was third while Star Style who was widely expected to put up a fight was a poor fourth, seven and a half lengths adrift of the third placed horse.

Michael Eshwer trained Tiger of Mysore extended her winning streak in Mysore by claiming the 1400 metres Aperitivo Plate, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Tiger of Mysore got a lovely run along the rails on turning for home and the progeny of Phoenix Tower quickened well and quickly established a winning lead. Savannah Sound essayed a strong challenge but looked unlikely to overhaul the front-runner though the seven-year-old mare was closing the leeway. Tremendous came home a late flourishing run but fell short in the end as the favourite surged past the winning post safely before any damage could be inflicted.

Bobby trained Moroccan recorded an encore by winning the 1200 metres Indi Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. After Dare The Don set a fast pace, Moroccan moved up with a flourish in the final furlong to go storming clear and had no problem in keeping the challenge of Class Above and Excelonce at bay. Dare The Don weakened to finish fourth. Eshwer trained Sardinia was driven out to victory over late-finishing Starstruck by jockey Arshad Alam who came in as the substitute for the injured Sai Vamshi in the lower division of the race. Premier Ace ran on to finish third.

The Sriharikota Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45, was declared null and void after Tobin had won the race. There was a false start and the starter indicated it by pressing the siren. Many of the jockeys who were in the front, did not react to the signal of false start l and completed the race while many others pulled up. Since the race had been completed by most, the race was declared void. The lower division of the race was won by Eshwer trained Clouds who warmed up to the task in the final furlong and measured the runaway leader Chrome and went on to win from Senator, Scaramouche and Reach The Stars who finished in close order.

Rakesh trained Order Order was guided to an easy win by jockey Nitin Singh in the 1200 metres Vesuvius Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Order Order surged ahead with a furlong to go and was not troubled by any of the runners. Samay Balwan and Amazing Beauty occupied the next two slots on the frame. Tejaswi trained Delta Delight who went ahead inside the final furlong, had to wage a grim battle with Always Resolute before scraping home in the lower division of the race. Vroom Vroom saved place money.
