Royal Sceptre proves too good in feature

  May 20 , 2017

Neil Darashah trained Royal Sceptre had it easy in the 1400 metres Karnataka Police Cup, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Saturday`s Bangalore races. After the first few races went the way of favourites, the rest of the races saw horses winning against the run of expectations, causing a big dent on those who hoped for the favourites to come good.

Royal Sceptre had been campaigned without success in the classics at Hyderabad. As such he was coming back to a handicap race. Royal Sceptre was assigned to a visiting apprentice jockey in Vishal Bunde which perhaps did not attract much betting on the tote though the odds with the bookmakers at other centres showed that he was the recipient of inspired betting from the people in the know. Magistero who was also coming back in distance after running over mile and a half in the Derby, was the favourite. Magistero and Royal Sceptre raced near proximity, ahead of the rest. Bunde pushed Royal Sceptre to take over the running at the top of the straight and the progeny of Ace quickened well to establish what turned out to be a winning lead. Magistero tried hard to catch up with the front-runner but his efforts went in vain. Rafa who was handily placed, failed to accelerate when the race came on the boil and even lost the third position to late rallying Ayrton.

Sulaiman Attollahi trained Siobhan broke the winless sequence with a decisive surge in the final furlong to claim the 1200 metres Sir M Visvesvaraya Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 45 to 65. Krieger who had been a big let-down attempted a start to finish mission and led the field into the final furlong. However, Sandesh`s strong efforts ensured that Siobhan could overhaul the front-runner and win with a measure of comfort. Krieger held off favourite Gypsy to retain the runner-up berth. The rest of the runners finished far behind.

Sulaiman`s another ward Shaman had no problem in asserting his supremacy in the 1400 metres Southern Empire Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Trevor found a gap emerging along the rails at the final turn and the horse showed enough resolution to shoot through and establish a winning lead. Castanea went in chase but found the favourite too strong to tackle. So Mi Dar was faraway third.

The 1200 metres Astounding Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35, saw the fancied duo playing truant. Girl With Pearl and Dagobert were in serious betting but the second named was sluggish from the gates and was out of the reckoning from the start. Girl With Pearl was not positioned well enough to have a realistic chance and her late charge could only fetch her the runner-up berth. Cool Springs grabbed the opportunity with alacrity to record a win after exactly a year. Girl With Pearl, Flicka and Loveisintheair finished in a cluster, claiming the places in the order mentioned behind the winner. Favourite Zafrina showed up on the wide outside and managed to snatch the lead in the final furlong and held off the late bid of Golden Success to win the lower division of the race. Cashmere was third while Love For Life who had run a forward race last time out was not spotted at the busy end.

Karthik Ganapathy trained Majestical just about nosed out Thundersquall to win the 1400 metres Lady Gibraltar Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Majestical took over the running inside the final 300 metres and established a good cushion. Thundersquall was slightly squeezed before apprentice jockey Amit could get his horse into full rhythm. Though Thundersquall finished with a flourish, Majestical held on to win by the proverbial whisker.

Jockey Akshay Kumar may be a top jockey at Hyderabad but he showed that when it comes to riding in Bangalore he has a lot to learn by his poor handling of Star Comrade in the 1600 metres Dupont Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. He had Star Comrade running freely in front so much so that the fancied runner was bound to run out of gas in the final furlong. Tanoura rallied well in the final furlong to win the race with ease from Tuscano and Proud Prince. Star Comrade weakened to finish a tame fourth.

Lokanath trained Mariko had the best credentials to win the 1200 metres Kunigal Stud Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50 after the forward effort on the last occasion. Mariko was always well placed to take charge in the final furlong and jockey Suraj Narredu had no problem in steering the fancied runner to victory. Manta Ray edged out Prazsky to get the runner-up berth. Shining Magic was strongly backed to win but the habitual late-starter, lost all his chances at the gate and thereafter it was a hopeless task for the favourite to make up the lost ground.
