Poet makes amends for last start failure

By: Stay Thirsty   June 14 , 2017

Michael Eshwer trained Poet made amends for failure as a favourite last time out, with a resolute win in the 1400 metres Amba Vilas Palace Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Wednesday`s Mysore races. The race ceased to be a contest once Poet hit the front as the four-year-old gelding always had a commanding lead right through the race and the others could only hope for minor slots in the frame.

Jockey Prashant Dhebe pushed Poet to take over the running from the beginning and the progeny of Arabian Gulf enjoyed his foray in front as his lead was also uncontested by the rest. Poet established a winning lead by the final furlong and his win was assured long way from home. Fancied Phelps warmed up to the task rather late and his late rally could only help him get the runner-up berth ahead of Magnolia and Kazuri.

Girinath trained Markus Sittikus was another horse to help recoup the losses of last time when the seven-year-old gelding pounced on the front-running Ascendancy in the final furlong and sped clear to win the 1600 metres Loyal Prince Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Favourite Gusty Wind though well positioned, could not change gears when the race came to the boil and finished a tame third.

Girinath trained Bandito got strong support in the betting to win the 1200 metres Somwarpet Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. The money was well directed as Bandito came home with a big flourish to easily get the better of Aliboxer to land the spoils. Eloika was third. The well backed Praelector produced a winning burst in the hands of jockey Sai Kiran to get the better of battling duo of Sky Jet and favourite Ephialities to win the lower division of the race. Sky Jet led from the start and stayed on doggedly despite a strong challenge from the favourite. Even as these two were settling the issue, Praelector showed up on the wide outside and the sustained flourish saw the Bobby trainee surge ahead to win the race with a measure of comfort. Ephialities nosed out Sky Jet to grab the runner-up berth.

The presence of Srinath on Benedetta saw the S M Johnson trainee receive solid support in betting and the progeny of Rebuttal did not disappoint in the 1400 metres Kaginele Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Srinath had Benedetta race a handy third as Zoe did the pace setting. Benedetta was pulled on the outside to get a clear soon on entering the straight and the favourite began to assert his supremacy in quick time. Flexi Legion kept Heaven And Earth at bay to gain the second position. Pratap Kamath trained Spinning Chakram brought off a big-priced win in the lower division of the race. In the hands of apprentice jockey Habeeb, Spinning Chakram put in a speed display to lead from the start and had a winning lead going into the final furlong. Though favourite Precious Asset finished with a strong run, the filly could only finish second best. Al Dorado held off Robinhood Pandey to get the third place. Waterfall was lethargic from the gates and was a lost cause thereafter.

Feroz Khan trained Steinlight proved overwhelmingly superior to the opposition in the 1400 metres Takshashila Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. The race proved to be a mismatch between Steinlight and the rest. Srinath had Steinlight lead from the start and the three-year-old gelding enjoyed a commanding lead all through the race. Lord Iisley stayed on in second position ahead of Akimbo.

Monnappa trained Mr Carpe was lucky to land the spoils in the 1200 metres Ranibennur Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45 under four-kg claimer Yogesh Vinod. To begin with, Mr Carpe had a sluggish start from the wide outside draw and the apprentice was unable to control the lesser fancied runner improve position on the wide outside and take over the running before the final bend. Mr Carpe had a good break which in the end held him in good stead as favourite Reach The Stars came up with a powerful burst of speed, only to miss the berth by a neck. Bestow and Jersey Bridge too had their chance but had to be satisfied with minor berths on the frame.
