Unforgettable You records smashing win

By: Frankel   August 15 , 2017

Malesh Narredu trained Unforgettable You who was returning to the race track after 303 days, smashed the opposition in the 2000 metres PRA Independence Million, a race for horses rated 20 to 46, the highlight of races held on the Independence Day at Pune on Tuesday. Trevor Patel rode the fancied runner with supreme confidence.

Unforgettable You was always rated as a horse of immense potential. Unforgettable You who was making good progress along the rails in the Pune Derby when the pace-setting Volcan fell in front of her, causing her jockey to check the horse to prevent colliding with the fallen horse. The trauma also must have resulted in a setback which perhaps was the reason why the filly was not seen in action for a long time. The filly had been subjected to good preparation with the help of a couple of mock races. The filly appeared spot on to win the race and she also looked a cut above the rest who were all proven lower category horses. The fact that Unforgettable You`s progress had been affected by a setback and barring her absence from the track, she would have been rated far higher was highlighted by the quality of her performance.

Jockey Trevor Patel had Unforgettable You settled in the rear group and he was not affected by the frenetic pace at which the front-runners went and expended their energies. Unforgettable You showed up approaching the final bend and joined issue with the sparingly raced Carnival. Without much ado, Unforgettable You zoomed past Carnival to record an emphatic win with the jockey having the luxury of easing up the filly well before the winning post. Carnival occupied the second position ahead of June. Unforgettable You was winning a race after 360 days.

It was a day of comebacks as another horse racing after 303 days also came up trumps in the 1200 metres Nawab & Begum Faiyaz Hussain Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Pesi Shroff trained Yana Rascala had won a race in October after which the got-abroad was laid low perhaps by a setback. Odessa who had recorded a win in the hands of the apprentice was installed the favourite. Jockey Sandesh failed to get a good position on Yana Rascala from the innermost draw and fell back. However, this time out, he was alert to the task and worked his way on the outside. Though he came the widest into the straight, the four-year-old gelding had enough ammunition to fire past Maduro for a comfortable win. Maduro kept the second position by the proverbial whisker over Stardom Calling. Odessa was not spotted at the busy end.

Mekong Delta had failed to win a race for 479 days but she could have broken the jinx but for the luck of the race going against her in the 1800 metres Rajaram Chhatrapati Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86. Though Mekong Delta hadn`t performed well during the summer season at Bangalore, the fitness accruing, as a result, was bound to help her cause in a modest set that she was racing with. Exodus led into the final furlong and even as Sandesh was getting Mekong Delta to unleash a powerful run on the wide outside, Palatial who was cutting an erratic course shifted out causing Sandesh to momentarily check the stride of the race. This made a critical difference to the outcome of the race. Mekong Delta covered the leeway on the front-runner and finished powerfully only to be denied the race by Exodus by an excruciatingly narrow margin of a nose. Palatial was third another short head away. Bold March ran a pathetic race.

Trevor Patel drove out Sweet Music to get the better of front-running Rochester in the final stride of the race to win the 1800 metres Mayor`s Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Rochester had the initiative going into the final furlong when Sweet Music began to made headway. The progeny of Dean`s Kitten began to close with menacing strides and overhauled the front-runner to snatch the verdict by the proverbial whisker. Fortitude was a fair third.

Jockey Neeraj Rawal was able to get the desired result on Auroden in the 1400 metres Floods of Fortune Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Long shot Sir Desmond had stolen a march in the final furlong but failed to sustain till the winning post as Auroden managed to pip the front-runner in the waning yard of the race. Backstreet Bay showed some intent while finishing third.

The fact that Lagad uses the Mumbai season to bring his wards to the lowest class possible and then tries to win at Pune is too well known to bear repetition. Rich N Rare was one such horse running in the 1200 metres Woven Dreams Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class. Despite being slowly off, the five-year-old mare improved briskly on the wide outside and stormed clear in the final 100 metres in the hands of apprentice jockey N B Kuldeep for a smashing win. Super Icon was second ahead of Pricelessgirl.

One was not sure why it took six runs for Wild Fire to break the maiden`s rank. The progeny of Verenar put daylight between herself and the rest to win the 1000 metres Thanda Plate (Div I), by a margin of 14 lengths in a record time of 57.596 seconds. Wild Fire had finished 13.3 lengths behind Selfie Star only 18 days ago. How jockey J Chinoy was able to control the horse to run so badly is something for the Stipes to explain. This time out, Wild Fire went at a scorching pace in front and was so far ahead of the rest that the race had ceased to be a contest well before the final furlong. Sandalphon and Optimum occupied the next two slots behind the winner. Favourite Stunner and Loire broke away from the pack from the start in the lower division of the race. The latter gained supremacy in the final furlong to record an easy way. Stunner was second more than six lengths ahead of third placed Touch Me Not.
