Kangra provides first classic for Western Aristocrat

By: Stay Thirsty   September 15 , 2017

Sulaiman Attaollahi trained Kangra provided new stallion Western Aristocrat with the first classic when his daughter won the Gr 3 Karnataka Racehorse Owners` Association Mysore 1000 Guineas with a command performance at Mysore on Friday. The filly who had run fourth to Manifold in the Kingfisher Derby was obviously a cut above the rest and this was reflected in the ease of victory.

Kangra was quoted at miserly odds with the other perceptible threat for her supremacy being Castanea. In a small field which saw Glittering Gold set the pace, Kangra who was in the third position for most part of the trip, quickened to take charge soon after turning for home. The progeny of Western Aristocrat, bred at the Broadacres Stud Farm, had the race sewn up long way from home. Castanea took a long while to gather momentum and though she was finishing on well, she was no match for the eventual winner. Castanea has scope for improvement. Glittering Gold held the third position while the other two runners in the fray who made up the numbers finished far behind.

Darius Byramji trained Emperador hadn`t run for a long time. However, the track workouts showed that he was sharp enough to bounce back in the 1400 metres Maj Sardar L Mahadevaiah Memorial Trophy (DivI), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Emperador was considered a classic prospect but he faded out of the scene obviously due to physical niggles. Into The Spotlight who had recorded an impressive win at Bangalore was made the on money favourite. Srinath had Into The Spotlight lead from the start and though the full brother to the celebrated In The Spotlight enjoyed many lengths lead going into the final furlong, Emperador was able to overhaul the front-runner in the shadow of the post as the front-runner faltered in the end. Emperador`s last win had been achieved on the same track last year. Veni Vidi Vici necked out Areca Cruise to save place money. Ganapathy trained Turf Magic maintained the amazing form of her last run when she thumped her only challenger Duke of Clarence by a widening margin of nine lengths. The rest were far behind. The timings clocked by the winners of both the divisions were almost identical. Idealist was third. Turf Magic can be a force to reckon with in graded races provided she maintains her form and fitness.

The money came pouring in on Prithviraj trained Rare And Bold in the 1200 metres Panchgani Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45 and surely it was not misplaced. Jockey Ramu took the favourite on a start to finish mission and five-year-old gelding had enough legs to last out from fast-finishing Prazsky and Wild Wild Angels. Sharat Kumar trained Why Should I answered in the affirmative by winning the lower division of the race after a long wait of 944 days. Humming Bird went at a brisk pace in front but closer home, the five-year-old mare began to slacken which enabled Why Should I to edge out the front-runner in the closing strides of the race. Princeazeem was third.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Mystic Music produced a strong gallop in the final furlong to get the better of Alexandrite to land the spoils in the 1600 metres J H Foley Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Ambitious Reward was third. Summer Dawn who was well backed appeared to be in contention in the final furlong but failed to accelerate and finished a tame fifth.

Tejaswi trained Heidrun got the better of Oceana in the closing stages of the race to win the 1100 metres Psychic Strength Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Oceana led from the start but closer home came under pressure from Heidrun who was brought into the fray with a well-timed effort by apprentice jockey Anthony Raj. Sancy, Golden Steps and Durer finished in a line in the order mentioned to take the minor placings.
