Cyrus Poonawalla appeals to resolve imbroglio

By: Our Correspondent   November 10 , 2017

Dr Cyrus Poonawalla who is one of the biggest names in Indian racing has reacted to the article written by Dr K M Srinivasa Gowda, stating that a positive vote was critical for the survival of racing in Bangalore as also to prevent the negative impact of the impasse on other racing centres. He has said in his letter to Dr Gowda that efforts must be made be made to resolve the issue.

Dr Poonawalla wrote to Dr Gowda: ``I read your article “Positive vote critical for the sport” and I entirely agree with you. Consequently, I have also spoken to the Chairman, Mr Harimohan Naidu to extend my support.

``I think one thing all of you and the Chairman should do, is to get all important racing personalities plus other 5-6 Race Clubs to endorse a strong appeal or recommendation to the members to comply with the Government`s requirement of 50 membership, which in my opinion is hardly any sacrifice to the egos of the existing BTC Club members, who have been so far pampered over the years.

``I am sure that the entire racing fraternity`s petition which should be either lodged or circulated to the BTC members would have some weight on their thinking on the issue. Please let me know what you and Mr Harimohan Naidu could do in this respect which, in my opinion, for any forward-thinking person would make sense.``

Dr Gowda in his reply has said: ``I am for broad-basing membership by including breeders, owners and racing enthusiasts as members. I am in complete agreement with you about the small sacrifice that the members must make.``

I am sure that the members in Bangalore will never think of this. They are as proud as a peacock. Poonawallas or anybody else, they will only think of themselves.

When ego gets`s the better of you nothing can change. 350 members have ruined racing at Bangalore for their own selfishness of being scared they rights will be toppled. If this was the scene at Delhi or Chennai no one would have worried. Bangalore is the second most popular racing centre in India were not only breeders have a stake but punters miss out for no fault of theirs. Let the members who vote against resign immediately rather than thinking of enjoying subsidised perks.

My inner feeling is that they will vote againist because they fear the govt will snatch their rights enjoying all these years for free

I too would like to urge the members of BTC to come together and ensure racing doesn`t suffer any further.
As a racing fan, I am very sad that our premier race club faces such a situation.
I hope better sense prevails. If racing doesn`t go ahead, BTC would surely wouldn`t exist, hence it would be like being a king without nation for the members. While BTC has the most to lose, other race clubs too are feeling the effect with reduced inter state racing days, the daily wage earners and the vendors are feeling the heat too.
In face of high GST we need to be stronger and more united.
*Opinion expressed is my personal view as a racing fan
