Athenaeus slams field in Darley Arabian Million

By: Tippu Sultan   January 17 , 2018

Laxman Singh trained Athenaeus slammed the field in the 1200 metres Gr 3 Darley Arabian Million, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Wednesday`s Hyderabad races. The progeny of Kingda Ka simply left the field stranded with a start to finish, with hot favourite Corfe Castle finding it hard to catch up with the front-runner and surrendering rather tamely.

The five runners in the field were all winners and as such the race looked competitive because it is hard to predict the kind of improvement that these horses are capable of as they are in the developing stage. In this context, the short price quoted on Corfe Castle was totally misplaced. Corfe Castle is bred as a full brother to the supremely talented Ruffina but then the three-year-old who had won on debut was running against others who had been equally impressive in their debut wins. The fact that Corfe Castle is a full brother to Ruffina perhaps got the hype for the horse. For those seriously watching the preparations of the respective horses, it would have been curious to find out that Corfe Castle hadn`t had the kind of workouts that one normally associates for a horse participating in a race of this nature. One was not sure whether Corfe Castle had any issues, but this lack of workouts was a matter of concern.

Athenaeus jumped off briskly from the gates and Suraj Narredu had no hesitation in taking the lesser fancied runner to the front. Corfe Castle did not get a great start and then ran green for a while before settling down. Though David Allan quickly brought the horse into the fray at the top of the straight, it was obvious that the favourite was not going to catch up with the front-runner who skipped away to win in emphatic fashion. Corfe Castle had to be satisfied with the second position some lengths adrift of the winner, with Bangalore challenger Mongolian King who had two wins to his credit, being a tame third.

Satyanarayana trained Dream Catcher is in great nick and the one-sided support for his success in the 1400 metres Lingapur Cup (Div I) was justified. Suraj had Dream Catcher in about the four or fifth position before bringing the favourite into the fray at the top of the straight. The progeny of Green Coast changed gears as it were as he romped clear of the rest to record a handsome win. Sea Castle managed to hold on to the second position ahead of Prince Caspian and Top Contender. Laxman Singh trained Mirfield had missed the bus twice but this time out things fell in place in the lower division of the race though jockey Tanwar had to face some difficulty in steering clear of the problem caused by a rider less Pentagon in front. Soon after jumping out, Naresh hit the ground and Pentagon was without his pilot and ran freely in front rolling in and out of the rails hampering Mirfield. However, the favourite was so superior that he could manage to overcome the problems and still win comfortably from Surprise Party and Baashagar.

The kind of noticeable flow of money on Netto trained Big Heart in the betting ring gave an indication that this progeny of Western Aristocrat would be handful in the 1200 metres G V Rao Memorial Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 42 to 62. The market favoured Champion Bull to have a strong say at the finish. Jockey Deepak Singh took Big Heart to the front from the start and the strongly backed runner enjoyed his uncontested lead in front and skipped away beyond the reach of the rest in the final furlong. Champion Bull made a late rally to be second ahead of Celtic Queen. Akshay Kumar drove out long shot from trainer Faisal Hassan`s yard Southern Crown to a resolute start-to-finish win in the lower division of the race. Vancouver was in a mood to upset but fell short narrowly. Favourite Southern Promise was in a promising position going into the final furlong but failed to change gears to make a difference to the outcome of the race and ended up a tame third.

Vittal Deshmukh trained Sublime who had let down expectations last time out won the 1400 metres Olympic Flame Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Fancied Hanoi was withdrawn from the fray before being loaded result in the race having no firm favourite. Staridar shaped to win the race as he had the lead till the final moments of the race. However, Sublime with a late charge, managed to overhaul the front-runner in the dying moments of the race.

Laxman Singh trained Far Sight was the on-money favourite to win the 2000 metres Step Aside Plate, a race for horses rated 26 to 46. The miserly odds were justified as the favourite warmed up to the task in the final furlong and spread-eagled the field. Royal Hero was second ahead of Halo`s Princess.

Srinivas trained Gangadhar just about nosed out favourite Mean Machine in the 1200 metres Sangam Plate, a race for horses rated up to 30. Gangadhar slipped through along the rails to take charge with 350 metres left in the race. Mean Machine closed with a powerful surge and the two went past the post locked together. Gangadhar had prevailed by the shortest of margins in the bobbing of heads. Reach The Heights was third.
