Double Nine gets his turn in main event

By: Frankel   March 8 , 2018

In the game of musical chairs, it was the turn of Noshir Cama trained Double Nine to get his due in the 1000 metres T M Goculdas Plate, a race for horses rated 60 to 85, the main event of Thursday`s evening races held at Mumbai. Double Nine was well backed to win and the task became easy since Anacapri the favourite decided to play truant and was kept out of the reach of the eventual winner by apprentice Zeeshan who rode a pathetic race.

Anacapri is a known front-runner and had won a bagful of races including a million at Bangalore during the Summer Season. The form inconsistency has been a major factor which had hurt punters. Anacapri was widely expected to bounce back but her running style itself indicated that she would make no show. She was kept too far from the front-runners and failed to produce any acceleration in the homestretch. Those who had backed her were reconciled to lose their bet well before the runners took the final furlong. Wild Wire led the field till the final 200 metres but thereafter Double Nine who was handily placed, was pushed to get the better of the front-runner. God`s Own came up with a late rally to get the second position. Anacapri was a well-beaten fourth. The horses from big stables keep running week after week and one fails to get a clue as to which could be in a serious mood to oblige expectations. The winner generally has emerged from the well-backed horse even if the public are thrown into confusion.

Pesi Shroff trained Dixie Land had gone down close home with runaway tactics on the last occasion. Now ridden with more restraint, the progeny of Holy Roman Emperor led all the way and held off the challenge of Gold Bond, Provi and Ventura who finished in a cluster. The favourite Red Revenge made no show, kept far behind and failing to produce the needed acceleration to be in serious business. Till End of Game who had beaten Dixie Land last time out, was never in the hunt indicating that some horses are kept only for one touch and then waited for another eternity for a similar touch.

Nazak Chenoy trained Epiphany was widely expected to win the 1200 metres Monet Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46 but the favourite flopped badly after giving hopes in the final furlong. Antia trained Untitled brought off a big upset, leading from the start and staying there stubbornly. There was spirited betting on Grand Tenton who had finished ninth in Epiphany`s previous win. Jockey Kishore Kadam is not used to winning races by the dozen and as such, he could not guide the horse to victory. Grand Tenton put in a late charge to displace Epiphany from the runner-up berth. There was big betting on Narendra Lagad trained Brave who ended up as the favourite to win the lower division despite the presence of strong contender in Wilshire. In the event, Brave was never in the hunt and was a beaten cause well before the race came on the boil. Trevor Patel who had three winners for the day drove out the fancied Wilshire to an easy win over Philadelphia and Highland Woods.

There were five runners in the fray for the 1400 metres Flareon Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds and four of them belonged to trainer Narendra Lagad. Perpetual Winning had shown out in the previous outing and his victory was something that was considered a formality. Sandesh had Perpetual Winning overhaul the front-running Mount Olympus with 200 metres left in the race. The favourite bounced clear to win by a widening margin of four lengths. The other three runners who made up the numbers finished some distance behind with an unhurried approach.

Goshawk had recorded an impressive win in his last outing and was believed to be capable of recording an encore in the Washington Irvine Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. The favourite once again proved to be unreliable, failing to reproduce the spark of the previous run. Jockey Sandesh rode him in restraint and midway through the race decided to improve places to eventually take a position to take charge. However, Texas Gold who was once a rousing performer, decided to put his best forward and encountered no resistance enroute to a comfortable win. Samarjeet who led from the start, nosed out last start winner Gloriosus to get the third position.

Karthik Ganapathy trained Finest Moment had come down to the lowest class and this got-abroad had a very weak set to tackle in the 2000 metres W Buckley Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Jockey Trevor had Finest Moment race in a handy second position before pushing the favourite to assume command well before the final turn. Finest Moment bounced clear and had no problem in winning the race from Dazzle N Daze by a margin of six lengths. Dazzling Eyes was a pathetic third.

S N Joshi trained Arc of Passion decided to put her best foot forward on a day when she had few takers in the 1000 metres Keukenhof Plate, a mandatory race for lowest rated horses. Arc of Passion produced a good effort in the final furlong in the hands of apprentice jockey Nazil to get the better of Arvan for an upset win. Tally Ho made a late dash but that was not significant enough to fetch him the desired result.
