Your Royal Majesty slams creditable field

  May 20 , 2018

Pesi Shroff-trained Your Royal Majesty who had failed to win on this track when he had come three years ago, broke the jinx when he slammed a formidable field in the Gr 3 Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Cup, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Sunday`s Bangalore races. Races finally began after many hiccups, but the authorities thoughtlessly kept the same card the declarations for which were over more than a week ago. In such a scenario when the merit of the horses is well advertised, the manipulation of form can only be expected much to the detriment of the unsuspecting punters.

On the known form, Tutankhamun who had won the Multi-Million at Kolkata towered over the rest as he had proved his superiority in fine fashion. Your Royal Majesty who won against the run of expectations despite being consistent was well beaten by Tutankhamun at Kolkata. If punters backed Tutankhamun with conviction, they could not be faulted as the form was strong except the present status of the horse vis-à-vis his well-being. Trainer Shroff always believed that Your Royal Majesty will not handle the Bangalore track well and had not brought this horse last year. Your Royal Majesty did surprise not only him but most punters with a commanding performance.

The speedy customer from Hyderabad Amorous White set a fast pace with Tutankhamun and Kangra in close proximity ahead of Your Royal Majesty. The other fancied runner Shaman was in the mid-group while Smilestone was in the rear bunch. Amorous White fought on resolutely till entering the final furlong at which point Your Royal Majesty took charge. The progeny of Multidimensional cruised clear to establish a winning lead. Shaman came up with a late bid but found the winner too good for comfort. Smilestone, as is his wont, came from way off the pace to save place money. Despite going at a good clip, Amorous White still had something left in the tank to finish fourth. Tutankhamun packed up under pressure and ran way below par. Horse of the year Kangra who was little fractious while being loaded to the gates raced keen but was the first horse beat in the straight. She was a bad last. One is not sure whether the pace at which Sandesh went was her undoing or she is feeling the strain of a long winter campaign. Both Tutankhamun and Kangra will have to improve by leaps and bounds to bounce back because on the back of this run, it is difficult to hope for a big performance next time out.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Hot N Fire won the 1200 metres Elusive Pimpernel Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Hot N Fire has had a chequered career in that the filly has rarely jumped out when she has been a hot favourite. Rum Runner was the preferred horse with Hot N Fire at nourishing odds. Tzar led for a while in the straight before Hot N Fire who showed sharpness at the gates, tracking the front-runner and easily overhauling him inside the final 350 metres. Hot N Fire stretched away for an easy. Zafran who failed to get a favourable position early on and fell to the rear of the field moved with a flourish on the wide outside and managed to grab the second position ahead of El Fenix and Super Success. For the record, Rum Runner was never in the hunt. Tzar and Regal Music too performed poorly.

Nityanand trained Peluche looked superior in the 1200 metres Welcome Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds but the short quote in soft underfoot conditions was certainly not justified because horses in this category are expected to improve in each run in their nascent career. Though Peluche obliged in the end, it was not as easy as expected. Sun Power who chased She`s Superb into the straight, shot ahead in the final furlong and battled on resolutely. Peluche who had some ground to cover on the front-runner eventually managed to win in the closing strides of the race in the hands of jockey Zervan. Stand Out ran on well to edge out She`s Superb to save place money. Le March who jumped outwards and lost ground, covered good ground in the straight to be a notable fifth. With experience, this filly should do well.

The lack of clear surface form made punters plump for Satish Narredu trained Annalease as in this sort of a situation the horse with the best jockey and not necessarily the form of the horse which has a tremendous influence on the minds of the backers. Such a perception is reinforced by the bookmakers` odds. Mystify set the pace with the favourite Annalease chasing in earnest. The favourite struggled to pick up steam and it was left to Free Port who moved with raking strides from about the fifth position at the final bend to swamp the opposition by a widening margin of seven lengths to oblige what appeared a quiet touch. The going and the obvious superiority of the horse was the reason why the race ended up being hopelessly one-sided. Aleef ran on from behind to take the second position ahead of Golden Opinion while Annalease held of the long-time leader for the fourth spot. The victory of Free Port gave a quick back to back double for trainer Nityanand.

Padmanabhan trained Volatility recorded a thrilling win in the 1100 metres Littleover Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Volatility was the favourite and jockey Ahsan Qureshi ran into rough weather inside the final furlong. Though Volatility had to be pulled out and cover enormous ground, the progeny of China Visit produced a powerful gallop to get the better of Rosebrook in the dying moments of the race. Rosebrook was also involved in the tight finish, a long neck and a short neck separating the first three placed horses.
