Salazaar treats the opposition with disdain in feature

  June 23 , 2018

Irfan Ghatala trained Salazaar treated the opposition with disdain in the 1800 metres Gr 3 Chief Justice`s Cup, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Saturday`s Bangalore races. Salazaar who had showed out in a mock race, lived up to the promise of that effort while comprehensively beating the opposition with a powerful surge down the final furlong in a new record time of one minute 48.40 seconds.

The race had a few formidable contestants though most of them had seen better days in their illustrious career. Invitation Cup winner Kangra who had flopped miserably in her last effort did the job of setting the pace followed by Ultimate Warrior, Desert God and the rest. Salazaar was in about the fourth position while favourite Prevalent Force was in the sixth position. Approaching the final turn, Desert God was under pressure to keep pace while the one who looked menacing was Salazaar who shot through with a powerful run close to the rails and easily overhauled the front-runner and bounced beyond the reach of the rest. Prevalent Force was not up to covering the leeway and had to be satisfied with the second position ahead of Ultimate Warrior who stayed on to take the third position. Kangra who finished fourth reportedly burst her blood vessels. Temerity ran way below expectations while Desert God who was running after a long time in India faded out to finish in the ruck.

Padmanabhan trained Most Welcome recorded a thrilling win over stablemate Indian Pharaoh in the 1600 metres Paddiwick Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Both these horses were in betting with Most Welcome ending up as the preferred horse close to race time. Jockey Neeraj Rawal had Indian Pharaoh take over the running at the top of the straight and the progeny of Excellent Art was not inclined to give up easily as he battled on resolutely. Most Welcome who had to cover some ground on the front-runner, devoured ground under a forceful ride by Trevor Patel and managed to nail the front-runner in the final stride of the race. The fact that Most Welcome had the benefit of a race run ensured that the scales tilted in his favour. Supernormal ran on to take the third position.

Irfan Ghatala trained Automatic had always given hope but did not fulfil the promise by winning his share of races. His last start second behind Dancing Dragon was suggestive of a change of fortunes and he lived up to that expectation with a decisive win in the 1400 metres Stewards Cup, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Into The Spotlight went on a start to finish mission while Automatic was relaxed in the mid-group. Into The Spotlight led deep into the straight but in the final furlong, Automatic who came home with a big rush, caught up with the front-runner and went on to record the second win of his career. Speed Hawk showed some spark while finishing third.

Poseidon who won the Governor`s Cup in winter had earlier been disqualified for coming positive for breach of medication rules. Based on that winning effort, he had good qualifications to win the 1600 metres M Ali Asker Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. The relatively inexperienced New Creation received strong support to record an encore. Apprentice jockey Darshan had Poseidon lead from the start and the fancied runner showed enough aggression to go clear in the straight. New Creation took a long time to warm up and all that she could do was to bridge the lead and neck out the late-rallying Peluche to gain the second place.

Three-year-old Decisive from the stables of trainer Faraz Arshad had the best credentials to win the 1200 metres Honeyday Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Decisive was backed to the exclusion of the rest. Suraj Narredu took Decisive on a start to finish mission and the progeny of Indian stallion Becket had no problem in skipping clear to win by a comfortable margin over Mystify and Halfsies.

Prasanna Kumar trained Shades of Desire won the 1200 metres Mystic Memory Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50 in tremendous fashion. Despite being drawn on the inside, Shades of Desire could not take a forward position and her jockey Trevor preferred to play a waiting game on the lesser fancied runner. Pink Smile and Minver Rose expended their energy in front. The fortunes fluctuated in front, with leads alternating. San Bernardino came up with a flourishing run in the final furlong and shaped to win but was shocked by the late rally of Shades of Desire who covered plenty of leeway and shot ahead in the closing moments of the race. The controversial Queen Latifa was full of running at the finish and she should strike before long.

Lesser fancied Nyssa from Praveen Jessu`s stables shot ahead in the final furlong and held off favourite Purity to win the 1400 metres Xisca Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class. The jockeys were not allowed to carry the whips in this race and most of them struggled to ride under the circumstances. Nyssa came from way off the pace and asserted her supremacy quite capably perhaps relishing the soft underfoot conditions as it rained quite a bit during the running of the last two races. Arya Stark was third.
