Corfe Castle bounces back with an easy win

By: Tippu Sultan   August 6 , 2018

Even as his celebrated full sister Ruffina suffered a rare defeat at Pune on Sunday, Corfe Castle who had given a surprisingly poor show at Bangalore, bounced back with an easy win in the Gr 3 K Mahipathi Rao Memorial Golconda Juvenile Million, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Monday`s races held at Malakpet. Jockey Trevor Patel rode Corfe Castle the exact way he rode in Bangalore but the quality of the opposition here was such that the horse was good enough to win from any position. Trainer Satheesh scored a hat-trick of winners and all of them as long shots.

Barnabas did the pace-setting followed by Catalonia while Trevor had Corfe Caste restrained in the last position. However, he kept checking the position he was in and was also assessing the distance from the front-runner so as not to repeat the mistake he did at Bangalore. After Catalonia took charge in the straight and led for a while, Corfe Caste breezed past the front-runner to win by a widening margin of five lengths. Super Dart took the third position while the pace-setter finished in the ruck.

In a tight finish, Satheesh trained Magical Skill god the nod by a whisker in the 1400 metres Stewards Cup, a race for horses rated 42 to 62. Supurinto led the field into the straight but soon was overhauled by George Cross who dictated the terms thereafter. Closer home, there was a cluster of horses charging towards the post. Magical Skill got the better of George Cross in the closing moments of the race and then held off the determined late rally of Ashwa Ashoka by a whisker. George Cross, Scooby Dooby Do and Might Swing finished almost in a line.

Satheesh trained Star Gazer brought off a big upset in the 1200 metres Shivkumar Lal Memorial Plate, a race for horses rated 42 to 62. After another unfancied News O Star led deep into the straight, Star Gazer shot ahead with about 75 meters left in the race and managed to put his nose in front even as favourite Dunkirk made a late surge only to lose the race in the bobbing of heads.

Satheesh`s horses dented those chasing the favourites as another long shot had earlier in the day downed the hopes of favourite Bradfield College in the 1600 metres Silverado Plate, a race for three-year-olds. Bradfield College who had finished second best at Bangalore in the ongoing summer Season was backed to the exclusion of the rest but yet again the favourite let down finding one better. Mark My Word chased no-hopper Darshish into the straight before spurting ahead and establishing what turned out to be a winning lead. Favourite Bradfield College covered ground under an aggressive ride by Neeraj Rawal but cut an erratic course and found the front-runner reach the safety of the winning post quite capably. Hailstorm who was also expected to have a say at the finish was a tame third.

Sequeira trained Rapid Fire proved to be too good for the opposition in the 1200 metres Turf Club Plate, a race for horses rated 26 to 46 but restricted to maiden three-year-olds only. Rapid Fire came into strong contention inside the final furlong after racing a handy third and then stormed ahead to win as he pleased. City of Akira necked out Long Range to get the runner-up berth.

Trainer Satheesh could have ended the day with four winners but Own Battle who had prevailed over favourite Buddy Brothers by a whisker in the 1200 metres Vikarabad Plate, a race for horses rated up to 30, lost it in the Stewards room. Own Battle came contention in the final furlong very wide and inconvenienced Buddy Brothers who was on his outside. Own Battle took Buddy Brothers out which affected the chances of the latter. Since the verdict was only a nose, it was clear that the objection by Nilesh Rawal against Akshay Kumar who rode the winner would find favour with the Stewards. Maahismati was third.
