Venezia claims Independence Cup in impressive manner

By: Goldie Boy   August 14 , 2018

Trainer Vijay Singh`s three-year-old filly, Venezia (Nikhil Naidu-up), displayed her sprinting prowess on way to winning the 1,400m Independence Cup, the main attraction in Tuesday`s eight-event card. The afternoon also witnessed jockeys Pradeep Chauhan and C.S. Jodha helping their respective trainers Vikash Jaiswal and Javed Khan notching up a brace of wins apiece.

Venezia`s victory not only confirmed the improving class of the youngsters, it also raised hopes for the other well bred babies eying for the forthcoming classics.

The Western Attachment daughter matched strides with the longtime leader, Emperado (Afzal Khan) – a recent migrant from the southern state, till a furlong from home and bid bye to her 11 rivals for a three-length victory over the late finishing Javed`s hope, Vice Admiral (Jodha) and another the other pair of Classy youngsters – Marbella (Neeraj Rawal) and Sniper (Dashrath Singh). The last two named definitely needed their preparatory run.

Jaiswal`s meant business right from the day`s start. The opposition was no match for the riding prowess of Chauhan who guided trainer`s Jorell to an easy pillar-to-post victory in the 1,100m Richie Rich Handicap.

Chauhan and Jaiswal kept the good work with the shocking victory of No More Politics in the 1,800m Golden Praise Handicap, thanks to the under-preparedness and injury prone opposition, including those who attracted pots of money.

Chauhan also gave a purposeful ride to the grand old man of the RCTC turf. The 11-year-old was ridden well off the pace before pouncing on the opposition when asked for efforts. Trainer Harvinder Bath`s Dixie Diamond, too, was a good second. In fact, the horse was also seen galloping in the rear with the ultimate winner, till the field turned for home.

Javed`s and Jodha`s hunt for gold started with the victory of Oath Of Allegiance in the upper division of the 1,200m Fly High Handicap. The victory of the Oath son was also long overdue. In fact, Jodha never lost heart when Jaiswal`s Born To Win established a long lead and entered the final stretch about four lengths clear. He kept the 7/4 favourite in the hot chase and went clear of the opposition when the longtime leader folded up.

Javed`s other favourite, Malana, too, matched the stable-mate`s winning verdict of five lengths in the lower division of the Fly High Handicap. The top-weighted filly chased Stunner, another of Jaiswal`s charge on an airing mission, but went clear of her rivals in the final 200m of the race.

Lumenac (B. Mahesh) provided the much needed winner to trainer Bharath Singh. The three-year-old defied his long sufferings between the two seasons.

Trainer Farley Rodrigues, too, needed a winner badly and his six-year-old quietly fancied runner, Top Cat (Shezad) galloped generously in the home straight to down Bath`s Fiorelle (Neeraj) in the 1,800m Arezzo Handicap.

Trainer Arti Doctor also had her share of winner. The Lady trainer`s baby, Sabrejet (C. Alford) scored an impressive victory in the 1,400m Smart Ruler Handicap.
