Impavid records hard-fought win in Governor`s Cup

  March 22 , 2019

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Impavid who was considered as one of the good youngsters seen in action this season, huffed and puffed before recording a hard-fought win over Sir Supremo in the 1600 metres Governor`s Trophy, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Friday`s Bangalore races. The progeny of Air Support did not win as easily as expected and jockey Sandesh had to go all out with the liberal use of the whip to get the desired result.

Impavid`s runaway win in his debut effort ensured that he went to the post at a strong favourite. Animal Queen led the field with Sir Supremo in the third position ahead of favourite Impavid. Suraj Narredu pushed Sir Supremo to take over the running soon after straightening for the home with Impavid in hot pursuit. Sir Supremo enjoyed a good lead and with Impavid struggling hard it looked as though the progeny of Speaking of Which could pull through. However, Impavid responded strongly close home and managed to get the nod in the dying moments of the race. Roma Victor was a faraway third. Impavid was the only favourite to win in the card of nine events.

Lokanath trained Striking Grey had recorded a smashing win at Hyderabad during the Invitation Cup weekend races and the quality of that win suggested that the progeny of Pinson could defy the penalty. Teodoro who had gone down by a whisker to St Petersburg was made the strong favourite though close to race time there was perceptible support for Striking Grey. Jockey Darshan who had a fine day booting home a treble was able to get Striking Grey to get a brisk start and the fancied runner improved places along the rails swiftly to be in striking position when turning for home. Striking Grey slipped through the rails and shot ahead and had enough cushion to save the day when Starry Wind made a late rally on the wide outside. Standout edged out Good Time Indeed to save place money while favourite Teodoro who sent distress signals at the top of the straight eventually finished a bad last.

Kishan Thomas trained Blue Blazer recorded an encore in style in the Leading Owner Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Noah`s Ark was the firm favourite while Blue Blazer was available at lucrative odds. Trevor Patel managed to get Noah`s Ark to take over the running with a ground-saving run along the rails with a furlong left in the race but had no answer when Blue Blazer swooped on him with a powerful effort. Blue Blazer swept past the field to record a comfortable win. Noah`s Ark weakened when a cluster of horses finished with a rush. Super Success got the runner-up berth ahead of Rafa and Siyouni.

Darshan got his third winner of the day in the 1200 meters Leading Jockey Trophy (Div II), race for horses rated 15 to 35. Colonel Harty who had the benefit of a race run was backed from a higher quote to become a firm favourite ahead of Honey Trap. There was a twist in the tale with Nityanand trained King of Shadows hitting the front from the word `go` and stayed on under a relentless use of the whip by jockey Darshan and the long shot thwarted the hopes of Colonel Harty. The jockey who recorded his first treble in Bangalore will surely end up being pulled up for the excessive use of the whip. Honey Trap could not match up with the battling duo in front and ended up a tame third. Apprentice jockey R Manish who was shown remarkable improvement this season drove out lesser fancied Md Khan trained Another Rainbow to a facile win in the lower division of the race. Summer Dawn who had let down huge expectations last time out, came up with a late rally to occupy the second position ahead of the strongly backed favourite Kimera who reportedly burst his blood vessels.

Azhar Ali trained Brooklyn Supreme won the 1400 metes Champion Trainer Trophy, a race for horses rated 30 to 50, quite capably. Apprentice jockey Anthony Raj got busy on the lesser fancied runner soon after turning for home and spurted into a comfortable lead with a furlong left in the race. Idealist went in the chase but found the front-runner reaching the safety of the winning post with a measure of comfort. Pradeep Chouhan who drew a blank on the many fancied runners he was astride had to settle for the runner-up berth. Amazing Skill spoiled the desperate bid of Perfectgoldenera to save place money.

Apprentice jockey Manish drove out Birchwood to a resolute win in the 1200 metres Leading Bookmaker Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Manish had the speedy customer get the initiative early and though strongly pressed by Princeazeem, Birchwood had enough legs to land the spoils. Industrialist saved place money. Kishan Thomas trained Yellow Zone decided to put his best foot forward in the lower division of the race and caused a big upset. The nine-year-old hadn`t won for 1092 days though he had many placed efforts to his credit. The rider of Stari Grad Prashanth Dhebe put an objection against Kiran Rai who rode the winner for interference, but the objection did not have substance. Island Pearl necked out favourite Incitatus to get the third position.

Lesser fancied Track Striker managed to overhaul the long-time leader Le Marc in the closing strides of the race to win the 1600 metres Leading Tipster Trophy, a race for horses in the lowest category. The M R Singh trainee chased Le Marc who attempted with a start to finish mission all the way in the final furlong and managed to put his neck in the nick of time to land the spoils. Winx finished third.
