Kambaku wins Governor`s Cup with ease

  October 10 , 2019

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Kambaku who was gifted the race in the Stewards on the last occasion won the 2000 metres Governor`s Cup, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Thursday`s Mysore races on his own, easily containing the challenge of My Opinion beating him fair and square. Srinath rode the winner with confidence.

My Opinion had beaten My Opinion with a measure of comfort over a mile-long trip despite cutting an erratic course and causing severe interference to Shesmyscript resulting in his disqualification. My Opinion was expected to retain his superiority even over the extended tip of 10 furlongs and was made the firm favourite ahead of Psychic Force. Surprisingly, Kambaku was offered at nourishing odds.

Steinlight did the job of pacesetting with Kambaku in the second position a few lengths adrift followed by Psychic Force, My Opinion and Grand Tenton. The pace was too slow for comfort and Srinath pushed Kambaku to assume charge approaching the 800 metres mark and the progeny of Win Legend enjoyed his foray in front and managed to skip away from My Opinion who struggled hard but could not bridge the gap. Kambaku spared more than a length at the finish. Psychic Force performed poorly, finishing more than six lengths adrift in the third position.

Arjun Mangalorkar had earlier led in the winner of 1200 metres Sardar K B Ramachandraraj Urs Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Air Command had the required credentials to be the firm favourite. Side Winder led the charge after being in the rear of the field for the first furlong. A host of horses made their charge with a furlong left in the race. Air Command took a while to warm up but once he did so, he had no problem in kicking clear inside the final 100 metres and staved off the challenge of Noah`s Ark who made a good rally along the rails from the rear position. Good Earth showed some aggression finishing on strongly but narrowly failed to snatch the runner-up berth.

Sajid Qureshi trained Brabourne who had served notice of an early win justified the expectations by having a decisive say in the 1400 metres Maj Sardar L Mahadevaiah Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Despite drifting out of a straight course in the final furlong, Brabourne had enough ammunition to stave off the late bid of the fancied El Tycoon to land the spoils. Vijay Arjun ran on the wide outside to save place money.

Long shot Pink Smile from trainer Sharat Kumar`s stable pulled off an upset in the 1400 metres J Tyrrell Memorial Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Bobby trained Rajveer was backed to the exclusion of the rest despite the four-year-old remaining a maiden in his five outings. After being ahead of the pack with a runaway lead, Rajveer packed up in the final furlong. Pink Smile who was in a handy position then surged ahead and had no problem in staying clear of the late rallying Fotogenic. Intrepid Warrior ran on from behind to save place money. Lokanath trained Duxton was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the lower division of the race. The favourite readily justified the confidence of the punters by tracking Birthday Babe well into the straight before assuming command in the final furlong. Scarlet Princess threatened briefly but the favourite skipped away in the end to record a comfortable win. Desert Angel was third.

Bobby trained Mint benefitted by the apparent lack of enterprise by jockey Rajesh Kumar on favourite Colonel Harty and won the 1200 metres Belur Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Rajesh Kumar restrained Colonel Harty in the early part of the race and got busy after Mint had surged into a decisive lead in the final furlong. Colonel Harty made a late dash, just enough to snatch the runner-up berth by a whisker from Deimus and Sun Power. Spanish Beauty continued to disappoint with yet another timid performance in the lower division of the Belur Plate. Backed strongly to come up with an improved effort, Spanish Beauty shot ahead in earnest in the final furlong but had no answer when Kvasir came charging at her. Kvasir got the lead in the final stages of the race and won with a measure of comfort. Tokyo Rose ran on to take the third position. One of the fancied runners Lion was withdrawn from the fray at the gates.
