Dream Catcher gets his due after a long wait

  February 21 , 2020

Kishan Thomas trained Dream Catcher who had come tantalisingly close to winning a race earlier in the season finally got his due reward when he made a powerful surge down the final furlong to overhaul the field in the 1400 metres Madras Race Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 75 and above, the feature event of Friday`s Bangalore races. Dream Catcher who was once a prolific performer at Hyderabad having won seven races got his eighth career win after a wait of 507 days.

In a competitive field, Sulaiman Attaollahi trained Into The Groove was surprisingly quoted at a very short price to have a bold show. Into The Groove went at a good clip in front but failed to sustain the lead in the stretch as she packed up too quickly for comfort. Attorney General, who was in the chase, overhauled the front-runner inside the final 300 metres and surged ahead. Merlot got a smooth run along the rails to come into contention while jockey Chetan Gowda brought Dream Chaser with a powerful surge on the wide outside. The progeny of Green Coast, despite carrying the heavy impost, flew home and measured Merlot who had taken over from Attorney General to win by a shade less than a length. Rafa also finished aggressively, coming from way off the pace to save place money by edging out Attorney General.

Padmanabhan trained Roman Senator accounted for the opposition in the 2000 metres Byerly Turk Trophy, a race for horses rated 45 to 65. In a slow run race, David Allan took Roman Senator to the front followed by Lycurgus, Treasure Striker and Show Girl who had a hat-trick of wins to her credit this season. Roman Senator had no problem in staving off the challenge of Lycurgus in a slow timing of two minutes 12.16 seconds. The only change that one saw in the race was that Show Girl ran on to finish half a length behind stablemate Lycurgus while Treasure Striker fell back to end up as a poor fourth.

The first race of the day was won by the quietly fancied Rancho from the stables of Imtiaz Khan who turned the form upside down by swamping the opposition in the 1400 metres Charmadi Plate (Div II), a race for horses in the lowest class. Rancho who had finished down the field last time out with a sluggish effort was in the betting being the third favourite in what was an open type of betting. After Good Word led the field into the straight and weakened, Fierce Fighter shot ahead and had the lead going into the final furlong. However, Fierce Fighter had no answer when Rancho swooped on him with a flourishing run down the final furlong and bolted clear to win the race in great style. Noble Splendour came up with the patented late burst to take the second position ahead of Fierce Fighter while Phoenix Reached failed to gather steam and was a tame fourth. Kishan Thomas had a double for the day through Apollo Bay who had let down expectations last time out. Apollo Bay led all the way in the hands of jockey Trevor Patel and had more than three lengths to spare at the finish to Glorious Days to win the upper division of the race. Duty Call was third ahead of Bazinga who failed to build on his last forward run.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Paparazzi who is a full brother to Deccan Derby winner Consigliori made an impressive winning debut in the 1200 Kateel Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Katana who was the favourite was withdrawn at the gates on veterinary grounds resulting in Amalfi Sunrise becoming a favourite by default. Paparazzi was available at lucrative odds. Glenary led the field from the start with Paparazzi in the chase followed by Baroness and the rest. Amalfi Sunrise who looked far from ready did not have the speed to be in the front bunch and she raced in the rear of the field and made very little progress thereafter. Glenary led the field well into the straight before Paparazzi bounced clear in the final furlong to win by a widening margin of four lengths over pacesetter Glenary. Baroness who is bred as a full sister to War Hammer was third while Dream Chase was faraway fourth.

The two top market fancies for the 1400 metres Bhagamandala Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 30 to 50 flopped and it was left to lesser fancied runner Bold Move from the stables of trainer Irfan Ghatala to have a decisive say with a start to finish dash. Jockey Vaibhav had Bold Move take charge from the start and the front-runner did not come under pressure from the other runners as he skipped clear in the final furlong for an easy win over the late rallying Brooklyn Supreme and Masada. Duxton gave a chase to Bold Move early in the stretch but didn`t quicken enough to make an impact. Morrane Gabriella was lost in the crowd. Duxton and Morrane Gabriella were the joint-favourites for the race. Neil Darashah trained Mohican who had been waited with for a touch proved too good for the field in the lower division of the race. Despite minor hiccups in the final furlong, Mohican broke clear in the final furlong in the hands of jockey Imran Khan to win as he pleased after a gap of 434 days. Mohican was backed to the exclusion of the rest and the superiority of the horse was in ample evidence during the race. Radiant Treasure ran on to take the second position ahead of Fantastic App.

Narayana Gowda trained Hidden Solider who hadn`t won for 755 days was strongly backed to win the 1200 metres Saptharishi Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35 but the long wait failed to yield positive result as the nine-year-old warmed up too late for the task and just about failed to get the better of the well-backed Agnar. The Pradeep Annaiah trained Agnar went on a start to finish mission by jockey John and the front-runner enjoyed a good break over Hidden Soldier who was in the chase. Hidden took time to get in his stride and as a result, his late rally failed to yield the desired result. Zhu Zhu Zest ran on to finish third.
