Vulcan has it easy in Wadia Gold Cup

By: Frankel   March 8 , 2020

Adhiraj Jodha trained Vulcan who was the only horse with a recent win to his credit had no problem in winning the Gr 2 2400 metres C N Wadia Gold Cup, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Sunday`s Mumbai races. The expected challenge did not come from the favourite Caprisca as the seven-year-old sailed away for an easy win. Sandesh who guided Vulcan was thus winning this race for the fourth year in a row, each on a different horse.

Four tired horses were in the fray for what was once the prestigious race. There was not a single four or five-year-old in the fray. Imtiaz Sait trained Caprisca who had won this event in the past but with no recent form was still made the favourite ahead of Vulcan who had a win to his credit 21 days ago. Seven-year-old Magistero who had not won for 863 days led from another contemporary Vulcan with Caprisca in the third position ahead of Bronx. The order remained the same until the horses took the stretch. The only change during the course of the race was that Magistero was overhauled by Vulcan inside the final 350 metres who then stretched away for a comfortable win by two lengths. Magistero stayed put in the second position while Caprisca struggled to retain the third position from Bronx. It is a pity that the race which once enjoyed an exalted status has ceased to be a coveted race for the owners and the professionals. There is also a dearth of talented horses for long-distance races and the same set of horses keep competing against each other. There was a time when some owners preferred to skip the Invitation Cup in preference for this race!

Enid Blyton who had failed over extended trips recorded the second win of her career over the winning trip of six furlongs by easily staving off the challenge of Guarnerius in the 1200 metres Flareon Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Neeraj Rawal had the freely striding Enid Blyton in about the fourth position as Pleiades led the field deep into the straight. Inside the final furlong, Enid Blyton surged ahead of Pleiades and Memorable Eyes who were battling it out and had no problem in keeping the challenge of late rallying Guarnerius at bay. The latter took time to warm him which effectively sealed his fate as he had some leeway to cover as well on the eventual winner. He also reportedly returned sore.

Vishal Gaikwad trained Auburn had the familiarity of running in better company and that helped her to assert superiority in the 1400 metres Mulraj Goculdas Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above. The got-abroad mare had thus far won six times in her career and five of them had come over a mile and the other win was over a furlong longer. Perhaps this could be the reason why Augustus Caesar came in for big support in the betting to end up being almost a joint-favourite. Sandesh took Auburn on a start to finish mission and the daughter of Champs Elysees stayed put there without coming under pressure from August Caesar who made a valiant effort to overhaul the front-runner but found the eventual winner too classy for comfort. Excellent Gold who raced in the third position held ground to retain that position.

Another Vishal Gaikwad trainee La Teste showed good improvement when winning the 1400 metres R J Kolah Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. The race had an open look about it with Arcadia, Touch of Faith and Isle of Skype being the preferred horses. La Teste had some credentials but the fact that she had finished more than lengths behind Isle of Skye when these two had clashed over a sprint last time out resulted in the progeny of Western Aristocrat running at nourishing odds. Isle of Skye was taken on a start to finish mission with La Teste in the chase. Inside the final furlong, La Teste measured the front-runner and stormed ahead to win with a measure of comfort. Isle of Skye tired out under pressure but still managed to stave off the late finishing Maplewood to retain the runner-up berth. Arcadia did not figure on board.

Mishka`s Pride had been beaten in the final stride of the race by Nekhbet last time out and the four-year-old filly made amends with a decisive win in the 2000 metres Jayaramdas Patel Gold Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Sandesh settled Mishka`s Pride in the second position as Grey Falcon set a nice pace. Mishka`s Pride assumed command in the stretch and bounced clear inside the final 300 metres to win by a widening margin of five lengths over Lucky Luciano. Benevolence was third another two lengths adrift while the pace setter disappeared from sight in the straight.

Pesi Shroff trained Barack who came in for sustained support duly obliged in the 1400 metres Indian Navy Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Neeraj Rawal pushed Barack to take over the running from the front-running My Precious in the stretch and the favourite bounced clear in the final furlong and had enough cushion when Polyneices warmed up to the task and came up with a late rally. Western Front ran on to finish third.
