Livingston downs former Derby hope Telescope

By: Racingpost   August 10 , 2013

Dr Cyrus Poonawalla owned David Livingston gave a blow to the lofty reputation of former Derby hopeful Telescope by lowering his colours in the Betfred Rose of Laqncaster Stakes (Group 3) over 1900 metres at Heydock on Saturday. Johnny Murtagh`s mount swept by Sir Michael Stoute`s ward inside the last furlong to comfortably take the £60,000 contest for trainer Mike De Cock.

Glenard which is owned by a syndicate which includes leading Indian owner Capt Jamshed Appoo won the Betfred Hat-trick Heaven Levy Board Handicap (Class II) over 2400 metres, which was the last race of the day, at odds of 11/1 to provide the two leading Indian owners a delightful moment. The winner got as much stake money as the Group III winner owned by Dr Poonawalla. The total stake money for this race was also £60,000. Glenard won by a shoulder from the favourite, Renew. The horse looked a picture in the paddock. In the race itself he broke in behind horses and Mikel Barzalona was happy to allow him to settle into his own rhythm with only one behind him but with a strong pace being set up front. As they entered the home straight, Mikel was sitting very quietly on Glenard whilst others were beginning to get busy. When the moment came to press the button Glenard ran on strongly, looking as though he was going to win readily before the runner up with Ryan Moore on board tackled him inside the final furlong. It looked as though Renew headed Glenard but Glenard fought back to nail the race on the line.

Incidentally, the two Indian owners were in the limelight with Dr Poonawalla owned Davi Livingston winning a Group III race and Capt Appoo`s syndicate owned Glenard winning a good stake money Class II race at Heydock on Saturday.

Part-owned by the former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, Telescope was looking to build on a wide-margin comeback victory at Leicester last time out, with connections eyeing a tilt at the Qipco Champion Stakes among other races.

The Highclere star was backed heavily throughout the day and was sent off the 4-9 favourite.

But alarm bells were ringing when the three-year-old failed to press on when Ryan Moore asked him to win his race.

Frankel`s brother Noble Mission also challenged but like the favourite, could not compete with the 15-2 shot David Livingston, finishing a length behind Telescope in third.

Highclere managing director Harry Herbert said: "Ryan is very disappointed. We just never saw that gear change. He was last off the bridle, but is still very young and inexperienced. They were older horses and knew their job.

"I think the trip`s right, but it wouldn`t surprise me if Sir Michael went up in trip. He lacked the turn of foot we know he`s got.

"Ryan said he hasn`t run badly, but has not shown what we know he`s got. Maybe something wasn`t right. We`ll regroup and see what we do next, but obviously we`ll think about him as a four-year-old."

A delighted Steve Jell, assistant to Mike de Kock, said of the winner: "He`s maturing nicely and Johnny said we could even go another furlong. He`s entered in races in Turkey, but we might just wait. It was nice to get his confidence back."
