Martin Dwyer banned for eight months by RWITC

  August 13 , 2013

Epsom Derby winning jockey Martin Dwyer has been suspended for eight months starting from August 31, 2013 to April 30, 2014 by the Stewards of RWITC at a meeting held at Mumbai on Monday. The English jockey had originally been suspended for 56 days for his riding on favourite Ice Age in the month of April but following his appeal, the Board of Appeal (BOA) had remanded the matter back to the Stewards for consideration of fresh evidence. The enquiry by RWITC Stewards had been postponed a couple of times and was finally held on Monday. Martin did not appear but was represented by his spokesman trainer Padmanabhan.

The full body of Stewards, barring Vivek Jain, reportedly took a unanimous decision that there was conclusive evidence that Martin had prevented the horse from running on merits and that a stiff and enhanced punishment should be given to Martin. The Stewards reportedly believed that the jockey had deliberately ridden the horse to cut the erratic course and also went on dangerously to a horse on the inside. The Stewards disregarded the fact that the filly had burst her blood vessels during the race.

Martin who was shattered by the decision of the RWITC Stewards has decided to put in his appeal. If the Appeal Board upholds the suspension, then Martin will have to sit out for the duration of the ban and he cannot ride in England unless the British Horse Authority decides not to reciprocate the punishment. There has been strong reaction on Twitter asking British Horse Racing Authority not to reciprocate the ban.

The suspension of Martin had made international headlines as there was a riot following the loss of Ice Age and the jockey had to be escorted out by security officials to prevent any untoward incident. The Stewards, who held the enquiry in the aftermath of violent incidents, had decided to suspend Martin Dwyer for 56 days. The ban was computed as being equal to giving about eight months of suspension under RWITC Rules of Racing as it takes about that much time for 56 race days to be held under its rules.

Reigning English champion Richard Hughes had to miss about a month`s racing action last year following his suspension in India for not following the instruction of the trainer while riding Jacqueline Smile and the jockey had unsuccessfully tried to get the BHA not to reciprocate the ban. One has to see what course the suspension of Martin takes but the fact that it is bound to become controversial in international circles is beyond doubt.

MARTIN TO APPEAL

Report appearing in Racingpost: A "confused" Martin Dwyer has vowed to fight a decision by the Royal Western India Turf Club to increase to eight months the ban he picked up in February following an appeal.

The Derby-winning jockey was told of the decision by his spokesman while riding at Wolverhampton yesterday but was waiting to receive official reasoning from India.
Dwyer had appealed against a 56-day suspension given to him by stewards who deemed he had not allowed short-priced favourite Ice Age to run on its merits in a finish that led to protests from angry racegoers.

"It seems like they have increased my suspension," Dwyer told the Racing Post last night. "My spokesman has told me it`s been increased.

"I don`t know why or how but I`ll have to wait for the official reasoning. I have 72 hours to appeal but I definitely will be appealing.

"I am confused because I`m still waiting to see anything official so I don`t want to say anything until then but I will appeal."

If upheld, the ban will run from August 31 until April 30 2014.

The race at Mahalaxmi in Mumbai on February 17 made headlines around the world after Dwyer reportedly had to be rescued by security guards as angry racegoers protested at his riding of Ice Age, the 6-4 favourite, who ran third.

Head-on pictures showed Dwyer`s mount veering to the right in the closing stages and colliding with a rival, after which Dwyer pulled his mount away. When he began to ride out Ice Age in the final strides, the filly hung right again with Dwyer reporting her to have bled during the race.
Reaction on Twitter on Monday called for the BHA not to reciprocate the ban.
