Dr Poonawalla outbids other buyers at Arc sale

By: Our Correspondent   October 6 , 2013

Held at an ideal time at the heart of the Prix de l`Arc de Triomphe weekend, the Arc Sale attracted a huge array of foreign investors to Saint-Cloud on Saturday, hailing from Russia as well as Australia, India, Hong Kong, the United States and Europe. During the course of the evening, 46 horses went through the ring and 59.18% of them found new homes, a figure equivalent to last year. The average sale price went up by 14% to €180,448 while the total turnover of €5,233,000 showed an appreciable increase of over 27.5%.

Guy Pariente` filly KENHOPE (lot 30), who was a late entry to the sale thanks to the Wild Card
system was the main attraction of the catalogue. As such, she caught the experienced eye of
Indian owner breeder Cyrus Poonawalla who went all the way to €900,000 to get his hands on this daughter of Kendargent who is particularly talented over a mile, with Mandore International
Agency being relegated to the role of underbidder.

Making his first purchase at public auction, Doctor Poonawalla was particularly impressed with the filly`s impressive race record and the speed which is so characteristic of her. After an excellent two year old season which ended with a second place in the Prix Thomas Bryon (Gr.3) against the colts, Kenhope had run out the stylish winner of the Prix de la Grotte (Gr.3) before taking it to another level in the Coronation Stakes (Gr.1) at Royal Ascot where she finished second to Sky Lantern. At Deauville this summer the Henri-Alex Pantall trained filly was beaten only by her elders when finishing third in the Prix Rothschild (Gr.1) behind champion Elusive Kate, before finishing a good fourth in the Matron Stakes (Gr.1), making up a lot of ground from the rear of the field and finishing like a train. Kenhope will now be aimed at the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr.1) at Ascot and will then head to Dubai for the Carnival. She will then join Doctor Poonawalla`s broodmare band in India.

Lot 57 EMPOLI also had huge appeal for many of the buyers who had come from all over the
world for the sale but it was Jean-Pierre Deroubaix (F.B.A.), acting on behalf of a Russian client
who had the pleasure of signing the docket at €580,000 for this son of Halling who is campaigned at Group 1 level in Germany. The Peter Shiergen trained three-year-old was second in the Rheinland-Pokal run over 2400m at Munich and finished in the same place in the Preis Von Europa (Gr.1) at the end of September at Cologne before being disqualified and relegated to fourth place. F.B.A. ended the whole sale as leading buyer having bought five horses for a total of €985,000 on behalf of Russian clients wishing to see their new purchases run in the Dubai Carnival. €360,000 was the price paid for the good two-year-old TCHEKHOV (lot 62), who has been in the care of Pau based trainer Jean-Claude Rouget. This son of King`s Best had an excellent update having won the Critérium de Provence (B) on 1st October at Marseille and thereby adding a third success to his record of five races. He was knocked down to Marie Yoshida (Asian Bloodstock), acting on behalf of the owner Lucy Lu Kai Yee, who had last year bought a certain California Bounty (ex Cay Verde), now a sprinter with an exciting future in Hong Kong having won three races and finished placed once in four starts there.
After Kenhope, another three-year-old filly from the training establishment of Henri-Alex
Pantall and particularly talented over a mile was responsible for some lively bidding before being finally knocked down to Hubert Guy for €320,000. The filly in question was BEATRICE, lot 46, a daughter of Dr Fong who has been successfully campaigned since the age of two. This year she has picked up two Group 3 victories abroad, first in Germany where she showed a lot of tenacity to win the Karin Baronin von Ullmann Schwarzgold-Rennen, then in Turkey where she took the International Istanbul Trophy on her last start. She will now go into training with John Sadler in California.

Lot 29 VISIYANI for his part is now headed for Australia where he will join Ballymore Stables (Michael Moroney). This Aga Khan Studs homebred, bought by Paul Moroney for €280,000, was a talented two year old having finished placed the Prix des Chênes (Gr.3) and the Prix Thomas Bryon (Gr.2). This year he won a B race over a mile at Maisons-Laffitte before finishing fifth in the Secretariat Stakes (Gr.1) at Arlington.

At the end of the sale, ARQANA chairman Eric Hoyeau commented: “In line with the dynamics of the Qatar Prix de l`Arc de Triomphe, the Arc Sale is an exceptional showcase for high quality horses whose varied profiles attract a very international range of buyers, hailing most notably from Russia, India, Hong Kong, Australia, USA, etc... Each year, graduates of the sale go on to win all over the world, particularly in Dubai and in Australia, and we wish the same success to this year`s buyers while thanking them for their investments."
