Temerity wins a walk-over type of race

By: Frankel   November 24 , 2016

Pesi Shroff-trained Temerity had to beat just two opponents to win the 1400 metres Maharaja Sir Pratapsingh Gaekwad Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, the feature event of evening races held at Mumbai on Thursday. The three-horse field did not serve any purpose except helping Temerity to stretch her winning tally to three for three.

RWITC frames non-competitive races which does not serve any purpose. Betting is the lifeline of the sport and such races surely serve any purpose. For any race to generate interest from all perspectives, it should be competitive and have enough entrants in the race. The race was to serve as a lead-up race for the Indian 1000 Guineas for Temerity but the bloodless win did not serve to test the filly or help her get the feel of a competitive race. Temerity cantered home beating a meek opposition pointless to win in a modest timing. This exercise would not have served the desired purpose as a lead-up purpose as in another race of the day, three-year-old gelding Lucas, carrying more weight, clocked a much superior timing. The only competition in the race was for the second place. Set To Fly edged out Sky Mine to occupy that position.

There was a shock in store for punters as on money favourite Frivolous who was hailed as a classic contender, flopped miserably in the 1600 metres Algeciras Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Frivolous had beaten Mrs Patmore at Pune and the latter had gone on to record a smashing win last week at Mumbai. Based on that result, Frivolous was expected to move up on the handicap scale notwithstanding the hype created by the stable that this horse had a classic ability. Whenever two horses of the same owner or stable run, the one with the higher odds has almost always prevailed. In keeping with this trend, Pugnacious who had a fair Pune season, shot ahead in the final furlong and held off the strong challenge of Mekong Delta. Frivolous who stayed far from the front-runners, could not cover the leeway in the straight and ended up a timid third. Both Pugnacious and Frivolous ran in the same colours albeit with two different trainers.

Cooji Katrak trained Artistic recorded her third straight win claiming the 1200 metres J V Shukla-Ashwamitra Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Sparkling Eyes was widely believed to be the best in the fray but the filly ran disappointingly, finishing a poor fourth. After Dancing Prince ran freely in front and expended his energy, Artistic came into strong contention. Despite veering out under pressure, Artistic proved too good for the field, skipping away in the end to record a handsome win. Turf Dancer who was in the penultimate position at the final turn, improved places along the rails to end up second ahead of late rallying Alien.

Prakash trained Wind Craft showed out in the paddock parade and lived up to the expectations in the 1000 metres Star Admiral Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Sandesh had the favourite run freely in front and the favourite checked in well ahead of Bullion Express who chased Wind Craft in vain. Royal Sapphire was third.

Zinfandelle carried the burden of public expectations in the 1400 metres Grand Passion Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46 but the favourite cut a carry figure. Lucas who travelled in a handy position along the rails till the final two furlongs, was pushed to the front by jockey Srinath and the progeny of Phoenix Power at once quickened to put day-light between himself and the rest to win in a better timing than the one clocked by Temerity who is being hailed as a classic aspirant. Reds Revenge ran on to finish second ahead of Drogo.

Nirad Karanjawalla trained Jeena was well backed to win the 1400 metres Gateway of India Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class. Srinath drove out Jeena to contain the challenge of Aeolus Maximus to land the spoils. Narendra Lagad who always has more number of runners in a race of this nature also had the third placed Secret Flame.

Ivor Fernandes trained Wonder Story proved too good in the 1000 metres Astana Plate, a race for horses rated in the lowest category. Wonder Story took command of the race in the final furlong and faced no opposition from the rest as she checked in by a widening margin of four lengths over General Lady who nosed out Rachel to get the runner-up berth.
