Critics Choice romps home in feature

By: Frankel   November 27 , 2016

Hoshidar Daji trained Critics Choice romped home in the 1200 metres Royal Calcutta Turf Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of a pathetic card of six events that were gone through on Sunday. A total of 30 horses participated in the six races that itself indicates the state of affairs at the premier racing centre which is facing a serious financial crisis which threatens its very existence sooner or later. The day`s races could well have been called off for the paucity of runners.

One cannot but help comment on the sorry state of affairs prevailing at RWITC. Once the premier racing club in the country, the club is battling for survival. The club has failed to generate income from its core activity which is racing and its income from other sources too is drying up. The RWITC is looking to tax all its patrons in a bid for survival. In the bargain, the punter who is the backbone of the bone has been given a short shrift making his survival very difficult.

Be that as it may, the feature event had six runners in the fray and the race was expected to be competitive. Dancing Phoenix, the best-performed runner in the fray, looked far from ready as was revealed by his pathetic performance. Dancing Phoenix who received good support in the betting ring, led the field into the straight before packing up without a fight. Deep Diver who was tracking the favourite took the lead but could not keep it for long as Critics Choice overhauled the front-runner by the final furlong. Critics Choice then surged ahead and easily won the race from late rallying Renee. The Champ who tasted the first defeat after five successive wins ran on to finish third.

The Maharaja of Morvi Trophy, a race for three-year-olds, a terms race for three-year-olds had just three runners, with Supreme General towering over the rest. Such non-competitive races failed to generate any revenue for the club with the race not attracting any betting. Supreme General who was quoted at miserly odds, was relaxed in the third position as Arak went on a start to finish mission. Supreme General cruised past the two runners in front and won the race without having to be asked for an all out effort. Arak stayed on to take the second position ahead of Rising Brave.

Vulcan was the on-money favourite to win the 2000 metres Stylecracker Borough Stakes, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Vulcan`s reputation had been built on the fact that he was at the busy end in the Pune Derby before clipping eventual winner Accolade and dropping his jockey which robbed him of placing in the big event. Trevor had Vulcan leading from the start but his foray in front was not easy in the homestretch as Frosty put up a stiff fight which lasted all the way in the final furlong. Frosty could put his neck in front at the finish. Joss was third of the three runners.

In another race, which also saw only three runners in the fray, favourite Serenita had no problem in heading the field from the start and skip clear of the opposition to win the 1000 metres P D Bolton Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86. Shivalik Shine showed some resolution but found the front-runner too good for comfort.

Sanjay Kolse trained Cyclone was the overwhelming favourite to win the 1000 metres Stylecracker Sprint, a race for three-year-olds. Cyclone had to be fully driven out by jockey S J Sunil to get a last stride win over Yellow Diamond. Cyclone had a troubled passage early on and conceded ground to Yellow Diamond which became a herculean task to bridge. First-timer Classicus ran a game race finishing a close third.

Sandesh drove out Volantis to beat Mariska to win the 1800 metres M H Ahmedbhoy Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Mariska showed up prominently inside the final furlong but could not sustain the lead as Volantis finished powerfully to get the nod quite easily. Covert Action who raced up with the pace, stayed on to take the third position. There was a lot of betting on Comic Timing who however failed to justify the high expectations.
