Commodore halts Arlene’s winning run

By: Frankel   January 1 , 2017

Pesi Shroff-trained Commodore bounced back to winning form while the unbeaten sequence of stablemate Arlene was halted in the 2000 metres Velvet Rope Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Sunday`s Mumbai races. Arlene who had completed a hat-trick of wins, found the quantum jump into this highest class intimidating as she went down tamely after the leading the field right up to the final furlong.

Arlene was quoted at a very cramped price though her superiority was not as clear cut as the odds indicated. She had a good chance of winning again but the fact that she was running against seasoned opponents was bound to make things hot for the favourite. Jockey Trevor Patel who missed the first two races due to the late arrival of his flight from Bangalore due to fog conditions, took Arlene to the front as the five-year-old mare had always enjoyed her foray in front followed by Jack Frost, Commodore and Remember Me. Arlene was traveling well while entering the homestretch but she could not skip away from the rest to establish a sizeable lead. She looked vulnerable when Commodore began to make a strong bid and succumbed closer home to the lesser fancied runner in the shadow of the post. Jack Frost to finished on well but failed to overhaul Arlene for the second spot by a whisker.

Favourite Franz Ferdinand from the stables of Pesi Shroff was unlucky to lose the 1200 metres Race of Hope Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Ancient Glory who had lost narrowly to Allora last time out was also well supported in the ring. While Trevor Patel positioned Ancient Glory well up with the face, Neeraj Rawal found himself at the wrong end of the field, did not get a clear run till well into the straight and by the time he got the favourite to stretch out, the second favourite had established what turned out to be a winning lead. Though Franz Ferdinand devoured ground and finished aggressively, he failed to collar the front-runner narrowly. Beach Game showed out when finishing a close third.

It was difficult to spot a winner in the 1000 metres Alma Mater Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class, as the surface form was not of much help. Pure Sin who had run second in her last outing was the preferred horse. Fashionable Gait who impressed in the paddock parade was next in demand albeit at long odds. Jockey C S Jodha induced a powerful effort from the lesser fancied runner in the final furlong and Fashionable Gait got the better of Bohemian nearer the post. Padmakosa necked out Country`s Empress for the third spot. Pure Sin made no show.

Sandesh drove out Shazaan Khan trained Dancing Lord to a narrow win over Sawgrass in the Pradeep Vijayakar Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Dancing Lord was angled out with a furlong left in the race to take charge and the progeny of Phoenix Tower established a winning lead in quick time which held him in good stead when Sawgrass finished with an aggressive effort. Favourite Sensex could only succeed in nosing out Speed of Sound to get the third place. Vinesh trained Angel of Love brought off the biggest upset of the day in the lower division of the race. Angel of Love fought a stiff battle with Hunting Pleasure to clinch the issue in the final strides of the race. The fact that S S Baria was astride the horse possibly was the reason why Angel of Love was completely ignored in the betting as one does not remember when the jockey had last won a race. Eight-year-old Asahi saved place money.

Narendra Lagad trained Top Wizard had lost a possible winning chance when he was hopelessly boxed at a crucial stage of the race on the last occasion. Now entrusted to Ajinkya, the apprentice took no chances as he took the fancied runner on a start to finish mission. The favourite held off Resilient to land the spoils. Cristo Boss who was the original favourite, was a non-starter.

The 1400 metres Kheem Singh Gold Cup, a race for maiden four-year-olds was considered to be in the safe keeping of Malesh Narredu trained Sweet Temptation who was backed to the exclusion of the rest. However, Sweet Temptation was withdrawn at the gates on veterinary grounds. Wild Jack had the initiative going into the final furlong but his hopes were put paid by Spiridon who floored the opposition with a strong run. First-timer Signor ran on to finish third.
