God`s Own canters home in Singapore Trophy

By: Frankel   January 19 , 2017

Narendra Lagad trained God`s Own who had the benefit of two forward runs, proved her superiority over the opposition by cantering home in the 1000 metres Singapore Turf Club Trophy, a race for three-year-olds, which featured the evening races held at Mumbai on Thursday. In a race, which saw the race being delayed due to problems with the starting gate. Dirty Perty who played up at the gates, collapsed and tragically died. Two other horses namely Rincon and heavily supported Gallant Knight were withdrawn from the fray taking away all the competitive interest from the race.

God`s Own enjoyed a decisive advantage as the progeny of Diffident was the most experienced of the lot. Gallant Knight who was making his debut was backed strongly resulting in the odds-on God`s Own shooting up from the modest ante post quote of even money. After the withdrawal of three horses from the fray which saw the start of the race being inordinately delayed, jockey Dashrath Singh had no hesitation in taking the favourite to the front. God`s had a good grip over the race and with none of the runners measuring up, the filly checked in comfortably ahead of Lord Commander and Dance of Fire.
The day`s card featured three races for the lowest category horses and two others in the lower class thus making the card pedestrian though for the first time we had a nine-event programme on a Thursday. There was quantity no doubt but quality was lacking. These days, the prospectus is framed in such a manner that racing in Mumbai no longer caters to better class horses, giving a premium for horses in the lowest category.
Malesh Narredu trained Volantis warmed up to the task very late but nevertheless it was good enough to fetch a narrow win over Sensex in the 1600 metres Marchetta Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Furious N Fast led the field all the way and had the initiative going into the final furlong but that was only on sufferance. Sensex easily overhauled the front-runner and shaped to win the race but the five-year-old gelding was tiring out in sight of the winning post. Volantis came home with a big effort which helped her neck out Sensex to oblige as a favourite.

Ivor Fernandes trained Wonder Story was driven out by apprentice S A Amit to measure Speed of Sound in the final moments of the race to land the spoils in the 1200 metres Estonia Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46, at long odds. Speed of Sound was hard-ridden to retain the lead but closer home, Wonder Story who showed up on the wide outside could overhaul the front-runner to win the race by a shade less than a length. Almost Magical was third. The lower division of the race also saw an upset, with Narendra Lagad trained Top Wizard pulling it off at the expense of favourite D`Accord who rallied late which went in vain. Alien too finished on strongly but had to be content with the third place.

M P Jodha trained Mt Tianmen has struck a purple patch. The seven-year-old gelding won back to back races for the first time in his career as he produced a strong gallop in the final furlong which saw him get the better of fancied Minstrel Heights in the closing strides of the race. Free Speech and Arabelle also finished in the cluster to occupy the next two slots on the frame.

Noshir Cama trained Jetaway who was waited with for a touch proved too good in the 1400 metres Pleasure Hunt Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. The lowest category races have proved to be the preserve for those who wait with better class horses for a touch or to those whose form is unpredictable. Jetaway belonged to the first category as the five-year-old mare proved vastly superior to the opposition, leaving the field stranded in the final furlong for an emphatic win. Jetaway improved places along the rails from way behind and had the race sewn up well before the winning post was sighted. Kiss From A Rose and Royal Éclair saved place money by finishing second and third respectively. Trevor Patel had no problem in steering fancied Sir Desmond to a start to finish win in the lower division of the race. Resilient covered a lot of ground in the final furlong to nose out Super Bolt for the runner-up berth.

Trevor was also successful astride Be Bold who easily got the better of favourite Highland Princess to win the 1000 metres Blue Ribbon Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Highland Princess had the initiative in the final furlong but could not sustain it to the winning post. The four-year-old filly was lucky to retain the runner-up berth as Rich N Rare finished on strongly but narrowly failed to overhaul the favourite.

Rajendra trained Sabiq looked too good for the opposition in the 2000 metres Academic Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. The favourite came from way off the pace to swamp the opposition in impressive fashion. Kitty Hawk held off Sanam to get the second spot.
