Jockey Trevor Patel was once again in the limelight, booting home three winners, including the one on Mathaiyus in the 2000 metres Hyderabad Race Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Mumbai`s evening races. With the season coming to an end in two weeks, with racing facing an uncertain future, there is also a big dip in the quality of races as well, with the races in higher category attracting just three to four runners. For the race-goers, it was an excellent day, with all the races being won by favourites or strongly backed horses.

Mathaiyus had no worthwhile horse to beat and was accordingly quoted at miserly odds. Mountbatten set the pace with Mathaiyus eased in second position ahead of Mekong Delta. Al Shamsheer was off to habitual slow start. Approaching the final bend, Trevor pushed Mathaiyus to take charge and the progeny of Multidimensional smoothly took over the running and went sailing clear. Mekong Delta gave a chase in earnest but found the front-runner too strong for comfort.

Malesh Narredu trained Star of Harmony looked outstanding in the 2000 metres R R Koamandur Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66, despite her wayward ways. Trevor had Star of Harmony in front and though the favourite veered out of a straight course and gave immense problems to the jockey, Star of Harmony was still good enough for the opposition to win by a widening margin of four lengths over Flying Dragon and Glorious Opinion. The only other contender, Jager Bomb was withdrawn from the fray at the gates.

The 1000 metres Bahrain Trophy, a race for three-year-olds, produced an exciting finish. Oracle who had won last time out despite the jockey being unable to keep the horse on a straight course, was backed strongly to win on the basis of the fact that a better jockey in the form of C S Jodha was in the saddle and that the horse could improve significantly if he kept a straight course by virtue of that racing experience. Interestingly, Miss Moneypenny whose last run was unimpressive, came in for big betting to end up as the favourite. Jodha had considerable difficulty in keeping Oracle confine to a straight course and the horse veered out under pressure. Wise Child was taken wide as a result but the three-year-old began to drift towards the rails in the final stages of the race which gave a protection cover for Oracle from drifting further. Oracle battled on to win by a neck over Wise Child, with the luck of the race going in favour of the former. Pokerface was third ahead of Miss Moneypenny.

Lady Serjeant had gone down fighting to Kramer in her last outing and had the best credentials to win the 1200 metres Satinello Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds by virtue of that performance. However, there was inspired support for Nextstar in the hope that the progeny of Stern Opinion would make a quantum improvement. Ice Dancer was another one in serious betting. Lady Serjeant who had the first run on her opponents held off the challenge of Ice Dancer who was lugging in badly by half a length. Lady Serjeant shifted out under pressure but had enough cushion to pull through. Fair Warning was third while Nextstar made no show. Ice Dancer probably would be better off tackling a long trip.

Shiraz Sunderi trained Undisputed had been running consistent races and looked to have an excellent of landing the spoils ahead of Nascar in the 1000 metres K M Munshi Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86. Minstrel Heights bolted to the front and led well into the straight. Nascar then took over the running and enjoyed a healthy break even as Trevor set alight Undisputed to cover the leeway which looked difficult at one stage. However, Undisputed devoured ground in such splendid fashion that the fancied runner quickly ranged alongside of Nascar and surged ahead in the final strides of the race to record a comfortable win. Incentio made a late dash to come within striking reach of the first two-finishers. Minstrel Heights weakened to disappear without a trace in the straight.

Altamash Ahmed trained Master of Trinity who had been raced just twice during the last two seasons, was the betting rage in the 1400 metres Switch Media Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Master of Trinity proved overwhelmingly superior to the field with a start to finish mission, providing jockey Neeraj Rawal an arm-chair ride to victory. Dancing Prince showed some aggression but found the favourite slip away beyond his reach. Rain Dance got the third place ahead of Grand Vitesse who lost all his chances with a none too impressive start from the gates.

Two horses had come down a lot in scales and accordingly were in serious betting in the 1000 metres Royal Deeds Place, a race for horses in the lowest category. Ainra attracted the biggest betting while Winds of Change had his own share of supporters. Sandesh had Ainra chase Knight At Arms into the straight before getting ahead in the final furlong. Winds of Change showed up with a strong challenge but Ainra was able to stave off the former`s strong bid. Silver River saved place money.
