Turning Point comes good in Stylecracker Gold Cup

By: Frankel   April 8 , 2017

Shiraz Sunderji trained Turning Point came good in the 1400 metres Stylecracker Juvenile Gold Cup, a race for maiden three-year-olds which featured the card of eight events that were gone through on Saturday at Mumbai. Turning Point who had the benefit of a race run, profited from the same as the progeny of Surfrider who took on a backward lot of horses justified the top billing.

Turning Point had run fourth in her last outing and though it was relatively a modest performance, it was good enough to enhance the chances of the three-year-old filly. There was a good deal of money coming on first timer Stari Grad if only because it came from the stable of the champion and had Trevor Patel to boost his chances. However, the horse looked far from ready and struggled for speed and eventually finished in the rear group. Admo grabbed the lead going into the final furlong but was pressed strongly by Turning Point. After a brief duel, Turning Point asserted her supremacy. Baby Face ran on to finish third, fetching handsome dividends on place betting.

Pesi Shroff trained Lord of the Sea had run a fair race in a graded race and that performance made her the firm favourite to win the 1800 metres J Robinson Plate, a race for three-year-olds. The odds on the favourite expanded close to race time with money coming in on Lady Be Good. Jockey Neeraj Rawal who is perhaps enjoying the best season of his career, had Lord of the Sea chasing Gdansk well into the straight before asking the favourite to take charge. Lord of the Sea quickly put the issue beyond doubt by storming beyond the reach of the only horse in sight namely Lady Be Good who looked hopelessly one-paced. Lucky Luciano edged past Gdansk to get the third place.

Shiraz Sunderji`s Multiglory who was poorly handled last time out, made amends in the 2000 metres H R Shantidas Trophy, a race for horses rated 53 to 79. C S Jodha on Raees hurried favourite Raees to take over the running approaching the final bend. Though Raees established a few lengths lead in the homestretch, it was clear that he was leading only on sufferance. The moment Multiglory was set alight, the writing was clear on the wall. Multiglory easily overhauled the front-runner and recorded an emphatic win.

Subhag Singh trained Sussex Pride recorded an encore at fancy odds in the 1600 metres Blazing Saddles Million, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Sherlock was the betting rage but the favourite who went into the lead in the final furlong was caught up with close home by Sussex Pride who produced a powerful effort in the hands of Akash Agarwal. Though Sussex Pride had the form, his chances were totally ignored in the betting ring because of the presence of Agarwal in the saddle as against Trevor when the four-year-old won on the last occasion. This time out, Trevor was on Sherlock who ended up second best. Glorious Eyes saved place money with another late rally.

Imtiaz Sait who had seen a couple of horses bit the dust as strong favourites during the course of the day`s action, had the satisfaction of leading in runaway winner New England who trounced the opposition in the 1400 metres S A Wahid Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. The quality of win recorded by New England last time out indicated that the four-year-old gelding had struck great form and an encore was a definite possibility. The odds on New England were lucrative because King of Killen and Backstreet Bay came in for considerable betting. In the event, New England who burst out of the pack in the final furlong bounced clear and won in great style from King of Killen. Auroden ran on to finish third. The stylish victory of New England suggests that this progeny of Arazan can maintain his winning ways and complete a hat-trick of wins. However, Imtiaz Sait`s Brabourne who received one-sided support in the lower division of the race, was a big let-down. The well fancied Brothersofthewind who improved significantly from the rear position in the run in for home stormed ahead inside the final 200 metres and held off the late rally of Cristo Boss who took a long while to gain his momentum. Brabourne was a well beaten third.

Trainer Mansoor Shah had a back to back double. Fringe Benefit obliged in the 1200 metres Rustomji Byramji Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46 thanks to a power-packed performance by jockey Trevor Patel. Fringe Benefit was strongly challenged by Maduro and shaped to overhaul the favourite but Patel`s perseverance enabled the public fancy to pull through. She`s A Tiger who was well backed to have a strong say at the finish, could do no better than finish third.

Mansoor Shah`s other ward Queen Ria who had been well prepared, came in for spirited betting in the 1200 metres Aristos Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class which itself indicated that the four-year-old filly would be in serious business. Apprentice jockey S A Amit had the favourite lead from the start and held off the challenge of Samurai who suffered because apprentice Jaykumar failed to add thrust to his riding. Rich N Rare saved place money.
