Siobhan overwhelms opposition yet again

  June 10 , 2017

Sulaiman Attaollahi trained Siobhan overwhelmed the opposition in splendid fashion in the 1200 metres Own Opinion Cup, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Saturday`s Bangalore races. Siobhan who has struck sublime form can be expected to maintain her winning ways. The day`s most impressive winner was debutant Romantic Star who gave an indication that she could well be a prime contender for the classics by the quality of her win.

Siobhan was an impressive winner of her first outing but thereafter lost her way. After being relocated to Bangalore, she showed improvement but found the winning post elusive. She has looked stronger than ever before and her last start win was an indication that the filly was peaking. After the runaway win of Krieger in the previous race, the form of Siobhan got flanked as she had beaten the former in her last win. Side Winder was more strongly fancied than Siobhan. Suraj Narredu had Side Winder leading the way with Siobhan in close proximity. Sandesh waited well into the straight before letting Siobhan stretch out. The daughter of Burden of Proof bounced clear and won in an impressive timing of one minute 11.88 seconds with Side Winder a well-beaten second. Top Spot ran on to finish third.

Aravind Ganapathy trained Krieger had gone down fighting in the closing stages of the race to Siobhan. With the benefit of that strong effort, Krieger who showed out in the paddock parade, produced his juvenile form of old when he swept the others off their feet and won with a great deal of comfort. Tax Free who chased the front-runner, stayed on doggedly and managed to wrest the second place from late rallying Antananarivo. Arvak was the betting rage but the four-year-old gelding who lacks the initial speed found the pace too hot to handle. Arvak was running without blinkers but the change of equipment made no beneficial difference to the fortunes of favourite who performed way below expectations.

Padmanabhan trained Romantic Star made a smashing debut in the 1400 metres Beautiful Babe Plate (Div II), a race for maiden three-year-olds. Mumbai challenger Goshawk who was blazing the track was the firm favourite while Romantic Star who is the daughter of multiple classic winner Moonlight Romance being available at long odds. Treasure Quest had the first run on her opponents in the straight but failed to sustain her lead as the big made Romantic Star showed up on the wide outside. Romantic Star slightly squeezed Goshawk who rolled in, causing the horses on the inside to be badly affected. Romantic Star left the field stranded in the final furlong to win by a widening margin of over five lengths in an excellent timing of one minute 25.7 seconds. Goshawk was second ahead of Habanero. Romantic Star looks like a strong classic prospect. Arjun Mangalorkar trained Kambaku asserted his supremacy in the upper division of the race. Nicaragua and Ultimate Magic were disputing the lead but both were floored by the finishing burst of Kambaku who got stronger close home. Nicaragua held off Ultimate Magic was the runner-up berth. There was a good deal of support for debutant Great Tribute but the horse was not up to making a mark in this company.

Sulaiman trained Zafran benefitted by the good forward run as she swamped the opposition with a brilliant rally from way behind to win the 1200 metres Sir Charles Todhunter Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Zafran was in a spot of bother as jockey Trevor was unable to take a forward position but forced her way in the straight to storm clear to win by over four lengths. Saga held off Blues Legend to get the second spot. Fancied Alaina made no show.

Leo D`Silva trained Juneau had no problem in winning the 1400 metres Mauritius Pearl Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. While Juneau was the strong favourite, Shivalik Honour too was the recipient of some spirited betting. Shivalik Honour led for most of the way but had no answer when Juneau swooped on her in the final furlong. Juneau went on to win easily to provide Trevor with the third win of the day. Wild Wild Angels ran on to take the third place.

Narayan Gowda trained Fire Rainbow had the benefit of a good mock race. The four-year-old filly came in for big betting in centres which have the bookmakers operating and perhaps this information flow to Bangalore saw the odds in the totalizator pool crash from a quote of over Rs 140 to Rs 69 when the race started. Fire Rainbow had the race firmly under her control with a start to finish mission and checked in well clear of the rest. Florencia was second ahead of Granada while favourite Wonder Woman was not spotted at the busy end. The lower division of the race was won by Dheeraj Venkatswamy trained Captain Clam who readily justified the spirited support with an emphatic win over late-rallying Thalassa. Favourite Bellerophon led in earnest but when Captain Calm swooped on him, he had no answer and surrendered meekly.

Rutherford Alford trained Hartnell who was a winner of his last start at Kolkata, recorded an encore quite easily in the 1600 metres Skyline Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. After Call Me Maybe led well into the straight, Ninon attempted to storm clear. However, Ninon struggled for speed and was an easy pretty to Hartnell who showed a good resolution to storm ahead for a comfortable win. Ninon managed to keep the second position ahead of late-finishing Turf Tactics.
