Accolade finds the winning mark after 294 days

By: Frankel   August 6 , 2017

Pesi Shroff trained Accolade who had run fair races during the Summer Races, benefitted by summering in the salubrious climate of Bangalore and managed to pull off a thrilling win over stablemate Your Royal Majesty to win the Gr 3 Pune Bookmakers Association Turf Club Trophy, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Sunday`s Pune races. With form horses obliging, punters saw a ray of hope after a severe drubbing all these days due to enigmatic results.

Accolade had run behind Smile Stone in one of the races at Bangalore over a sprint and that effort was indeed suggestive of an early win. Though he is yet to get over the problem of hanging in when overhauling the front-runners in the straight, jockey Trevor Patel managed to keep him going despite the obvious difficulties imposed by such a habit of the horse and did well to get the better of Your Royal Majesty who was refusing to concede defeat in the capable hands of jockey Sandesh. Your Royal Majesty had always performed poorly on the Pune track but this run was a departure from the past performances. Trevor confidently eased Accolade in the rear group before steadily improving places in the straight to measure Holy Smoke and the stablemate in the straight. Dancing Prances who has been an outstanding performer ran on to finish third. The fact that he weighed 550 kgs as per the weights displayed by the club perhaps indicated that he needed this run to remove of the cobwebs of being idle for over three months.

With two owner mates being strongly fancied to win the 1000 metres Conrad Pune Salver, a race for horses rated 40 to 66, punters were in a dilemma. Wise Child was more preferred than House of Commons who theoretically had better claims to be the favourite. Wise Child had the lead going into the final furlong but he could not breathe easy as House of Commons gave a hot chase. The latter got stronger in the closing stages of the race and won comfortably from Charging Tigress who rallied from way off the pace to finish an impressive second.

M P Jodha trained My Blessings was suitably placed to strike it rich in the 1000 metres Moosa M Hoosein Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 66. Slam Dunk attempted to win with an aggressive run in front but closer home, could not handle the rival who showed greater speed and resolution to win with a measure of comfort. Gloriana was third while Philadelphia who was in strong betting was a tame fourth.

Imtiaz A Sait who has begun the season well, led in a winner through Harmony of the Sea who overwhelmed front-running Rincon in the final 100 metres to win the Hurricane Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds in convincing fashion. Trevor had Rincon lead from the start and though the fancied runner put up a fight, Harmony of the Sea proved more determined and better on class. The lower division of the season went the way of the favourite Mygrator who made a successful start to finish dash to the post. Mygrator drifted out of a straight course and even bumped Tower Bridge who fell behind. Gallant Knight ran on to finish second. There was an objection against Yash Narredu who rode the winner for interference but it not serious enough for the favourite to lose its place and accordingly it was overruled.

Malesh Narredu trained Daughterofthesun pulled off a big upset in the1600 metres Cabriolet Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Daughterofthesun had the lead going into the final furlong and was under pressure to keep it by a relentless Zanara. Jockey C S Jodha used all the aggression at his command to keep the filly going and the daughter of Dino eventually prevailed by a narrow margin over hard-ridden Zanara. Gdansk was third ahead of favourite Collegium.

Trevor Patel drove out favourite Star Scholar to get the better of front-running Paradise in the closing strides of the 1800 metres Radiant Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Paradise stole a march on entering the homestretch and was not inclined to give up easily. However, Star Scholar in his relentless pursuit got the nod in the closing strides of the race. Wizard of Odds was faraway third.
