Noverro brings cheers the battered stable

By: Goldie Boy   November 22 , 2017

Trainer Bharath Singh`s 4/1 shot, Noverro (Dashrath Singh-up) won a close battle with trainer James McKeown`s in-form horse, Invincible Prince (C. Alford) to claim the 1,200m RWITC Cup, Wednesday`s feature event. Bharath`s other fancied runners, however, proved big letdowns in the eight-event card; which also witnessed Christopher booting home three winners, including James` Mahasuvi, and the Aashey Doctor-trained pair of Heliconia and Glorious Leaps. Early in the afternoon, James had saddled Ophion (S. John) to victory.

Christopher, riding Invincible Prince, tried to steal a march over his 10 rivals but efforts of the jockey, on the rejuvenated seven-year-old horse, fell marginally short, nearing the winning post when Dashrath atop Noverro, managed to get something extra out of the five-year-old to secure the verdict.

However, similar efforts of Christopher, on a strongly wagered Mahasuvi had paid off late in the afternoon, as the Western Aristocrat filly romped home to claim the 1,100m Absolute Handicap. Jockey S. John had opened James` account, guiding another strongly backed runner, Ophion, to victory in the 1,600m Fusebox Handicap. It was Ophion`s creditable performance as the four-year-old took a level start and also covered plenty of ground in the home-stretch. Further, Ophion had been off the track for nearly seven months and winning a mile race, without a preparatory run, is not an easy task.

Bharath`s Ayra`s Pet brought about the biggest disappointment. The 17/20 hot favourite, raised hopes of victory inside the last furlong of the 1,200m Haskell David Memorial Cup. The four-year0old, however, went down tamely when pressed by the Christopher-ridden Glorious Leaps, a compatriot.

The story was no different when Bharath`s quietly fancied Marguirita ran short of gas after dictating terms up-front till turning for home to pave way for Heliconia`s narrow victory over trainer Shafiq Khan`s 18/10 favourite, Artiste Royal (T.S. Jodha).

The Khan-Jodha combinations had pulled off a smart win in the curtain raiser, the upper division of the Young Lady Handicap after their fancied runner, Ahlan, covered good ground from rear of the field to score a back-to-back victory.

The lower division of the race was an easy pick for trainer Dipak Karki`s speedster, Footloose (app. Ranidan Singh) who was a winner at every post. Surprisingly, trainer Arti Doctor`s Hearts On Fire (C. Alford), in the same race, cornered tonne of money in the betting but finished last after a brief show in the early half of the race.

Trainer Rutherford Alford`s hot favourite, Antiquarian (Ashhad Asbar), however, fully justified his short odds on his way to winning the 1,600m Rising Star Handicap. Asbar just needed to guide the youngster with hands and heels to score. The horse is capable of winning again.
