Symbol of Gold puts up gutsy show to clinch feature

By: Frankel   December 17 , 2017

Arjun Anne trained Symbol of Gold put up a resolute start to finish and staved off a stiff challenge essayed by Pallisade`s Park to win the 1200 metres EME Centres Rolling Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 42 to 62, the feature event of Sunday`s races held at Malakpet. The lower division of the race was claimed by Warrior Supreme who prevailed over Ruby`s Gift by a whisker.

Apprentice jockey B R Kumar had the lesser fancied Symbol of Gold lead from the start and though the front-runner looked vulnerable all the way in the final furlong to the assault launched by Pallisade`s Park, the Arjun Anne trainee pulled out that bit extra at the finish to win quite comfortably in the end. Celtic Queen was well positioned but failed to change gear when the race warmed up and had to settle for the third position. In the lower division of the race, Prasad Raju trained Ruby`s Gift shaped to cause a big upset as she held sway till the closing moments of the race. Warrior Supreme who rallied well along the rails was persevered with by Parmar and his powerful effort yielded result as the fancied runner snatched the verdict by a whisker. Favourite New Port who was bidding for a hat-trick was in the hunt but weakened to finish a close third.

Hilton Sequeira trained Dancing Away came in for noticeable support in the 1400 metres Zurbaran Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated up to 30. Carnival Express had more supporters to record a repeat win. Dancing Away was at the rear end till turning for home but swiftly improved places in the straight and by the final furlong he was ahead of the rest by a furlong and the rest were left with a hopeless task. Soaring Sensex and Sensation occupied the next two slots on the frame while Carnival Express put up a pathetic performance. Sunday Carnival produced a scintillating run down the final furlong to win the lower division of the race from Mean Machine who drifted out under pressure and lost the chance of pulling it off. Old Faithful ran on strongly but just about failed to get the runner-up berth from Mean Machine.

Donald Netto trained Prep One pulled off a thrilling win by a whisker over Dear Friend and Princess Hina in the 1400 metre Osman Sagar Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 26 to 46. Dear Friend held the lead till the final stride of the race with Prep One pulling it off in the concluding stride of the race. Three horses charged home with the photo determining the order of placing. Gunner was successful in the lower division of the race, getting strong in the final furlong to get the better of front-running Coruba. Royal Hero could have been a serious threat, but he drifted out under pressure which put paid to his hopes despite a powerful finishing effort. Namdhari relegated Coruba to the fourth place.

Fergus Sweeney drove out favourite Icon Grey powerfully to get the better of Lazer Beam in the closing strides of the race to win the 1100 metres Crack Regiment Plate, a race for maiden two-year-olds. Durango was faraway third.

In a cluster finish in which six horses were involved, Space Ship managed to get the race from Gorgeous Lady, the 1100 metres Zoom Zoom Plate, a race for horses rated 26 to 46. Khan Sahib, Born To Do It, Sweet Story and Prime Time were all in a line with the shortest margins separating them at the finish.
