Multitude justifies odds while outsiders rule

By: Goldie Boy   January 13 , 2018

Multitude, once again, had an easy measure of the opposition. The Vijay Singh-trained prized galloper claimed the 1,200m Calcutta Champions` Sprint Trophy in the hands of jockey Dashrath Singh who guided the six-year-old in his preparatory run for the forthcoming Sprinters` Cup, early in the month of March. The afternoon was mainly ruled by outsiders as the sport was very competitive.

The victory of Multitude, the 6/10 favourite, over an opposition; which also included the sprint-king, Denny Crane (Imran Chisty), was special. It is another matter that Denny Crane, who was an accomplished sprinter, was hardly prepared for the race since he changed colours and the stable – from Pesi Shroff to Vikash Jaiswal. Yet, the Arazan son placed a close last, only about two lengths behind Multitude. The afternoon also witnessed trainer Patrick Quinn notching up a double through his heavily fancied runner, Alisha`s Pet and a friendless Apalachee.

The outcome of the Sprint became visibly clear at the halfway stage when the speedy Denny Crane could not manage to dictate the terms in the five-horse field. Multitude, on the other hand, was a handy third, his usual style, till 300m from before making his winning run.

In the 1,200m Eastern Command Cup, trainer Bharath Singh`s four-year-old, Gryffindor (C. Alford) was expected to carry his good form to a back-to-back victory but Quinn`s, 7/4 heavily fancied charge, Alisha`s Pet (Chisty), had other ideas. The six-year-old mare revealed her superior western India class in the final 150m of the race after Gryffindor had almost taken the opposition in his stride until the final 100 metres.

One Man Army`s (app. Sujit Paswan) constant disturbance up-front, may have taken the steam out of Gryffindor. Alford could have opted for a waiting race.

Quinn`s Apalachee (Ryan Marshall), on the other hand, had few takers in the 1,100m Jeep Cup. The horse won, thanks to Dashrath`s decision to experiment with the holding back tactics on the speedy favourite, Levante. In the baby race, the 1,100m Speed INC Trophy, trainer Bharath Singh`s friendless filly, Jezzabelle (Md Islam), delivered the biggest blow in the nine-event card. The daughter of Burden of Proof was always in chase of trainer Jasbir Singh`s Kefira (Mohit Singh) in the nine-horse field but caught up with leader barely 75m from home for an easy victory. In the same race, a heavily fancied Romonoff (Hindu Singh) was never in the race, indicating that the Air Support colt may do better over a slightly longer course.

Trainer Javed Khan`s Rasq Sharqi (B. Mahesh) had been knocking at the door since his last win. The 3/1 shot decided to put his best foot forward in the 1,600m Lt Gen. Mahmood Memorial Cup. However, the Kings Ka colt was fully stretched by Jasbir`s Zandra and Vijay`s Smith And Wesson.

In the 1,600m Harley Davidson Cup, Arti Doctor`s Sweet Music (R.S. Bhati), pulled off another smart victory, the horse, back-to-back. The horse was again ridden well off the pace and he is capable o0f making three-in-a-row.

Trainer Rutherford`s 5/1 chance Queen`s Kitten (Nikhil Naidu), the other horse who had been knocking at the door, returned an easy winner of the Astrodance Handicap for horses in the lowest class. The other two events also marked for horses in the lower classes – the 1,200m Spartan Poker Trophy and the 1,200m Kawasaki Trophy -- were picked by trainers Farley Rodrigues` 7/1 chance, Major Colours (app. P. Vikram), and Sarfraz Khan`s Artificial (app. Rupal Singh), a rank outsider.
