Alaindair takes Champion Cup field in stride

By: Goldie Boy   January 23 , 2018

Trainer Altamash Ahmed`s prized possession, Alaindair, continued to dig gold despite his near seven-month of lay off and, more importantly, his advancing age. The eight-year-old had an easy measure of a talented and younger opposition on his way to winning the 2,000m Indian Champion Cup, Tuesday`s main attraction in the eight-event card. Jockey Y.S. Srinath partnered the Multidimensional/God`s Grace son to victory, further swelling his winning kitty by Rs 20 lakh.

It was a run-of-the-mill performance by Alaindair. Srinath had the 10/1 shot settled close behind the long time leaders Shivalik Storm (David Allan), Rewalding (Mohit Singh), Setaflame (P.S. Chauhan) and Whomakestherules (Suraj Narredu) till about the final 200m, before pouncing on them for a facile one-length-plus victory.

The 5/2 favourite Whomakestherules was first to raise hopes of winning, passing the distance-post but finally placed fourth as he had no answer to the challenge of Alaindair and of the late-finishing Colombiana (Neeraj Rawal) while the weakening Shivalik Showers hung on to the third berth.

The power-packed riding, combined with, his strategy, worked to the advantage of Allan`s quietly fancied ride, on Vijay Singh`s ward, Sniper, in the 1,400m Indian Champagne Stakes – considered as an important baby event and also as a pointer towards the future Classic hopefuls. The 9/2 shot was up with the field before being settled in the third-fourth berth for the late assault. It was the last outing runaway winner, Eastern Star (Dashrath Singh) who tried to steal a march over Lancaster (Trevor Patel) but the scene changed, thanks to the early hot-pace; which took the toll on the other fancied runners, including the 6/4 favourite, Aashna (Suraj). Allan, who was seen working hard on Sniper from the 300m from home, got the required respond from his charge barely 100m from the winning post to score over the late finishing Home Of The Brave (C. Alford), who was impressive in the defeat.

The other noticeable performer, on the afternoon ruled by long shots, was the trainer Raunak Banerji`s friendless runner, Arminius (B. Mahesh) who made every post of the 1,600m Bengal Club Cup a winning one, despite his advancing age. The seven-year-old son of Hard Spun had a narrow measure of Mocha Loca (S. Kamble) and the 12/10 favourite Rufus (Dashrath), an impressive fourth in the 2000 Guineas. Mocha Loca did give run for the money, thanks to her light impost of 52-kg, but Rufus with 59-kg on his back, was a hard-pressed third.

The jockeys-trainers combinations of Chauhan-Viaksh Jaiswal fetched them popular treble in the lesser events. In fact, their third win, on El Cid, was gained in the stewards` room after Jorell and Outrider had delivered the goods without much of a worry.

It was Bharath`s Fab Bullet (Chisty) who had won the 2,000m Allodium Handicap from El Cid but the verdict was rightly reversed, following an objection. The shifting-in Bullet had caused a serious interference to the winning chances of El Cid and Cool Conqueror (Mahesh).

Vikash`s Outrider, too, won easily, in the 1,400m Albert Piperno Memorial Handicap. It was a pillar-to-post effort by the 9/2 shot for a back-to-back victory.

Trainer Javed Khan`s western India migrant, Highland Princess (Neeraj) was another one who won from the start to have an easy measure of Bharath heavily wagered Day Flower (Allan) in the 1,00m Commuter Handicap.

Jorell, from Vikash`s stable, made no heavy bones about his superiority, in the upper division of the Allied Forces Handicap. In chase of Daniel David`s speedy customer, Land Of Glory (Russell Xaivers), till a furlong from home, Jorell took over to score without a fuss.

Bharath`s fancied Bulldozer, finally, decided to put his best foot forward in the lower division of the 1,200m Allied Forces Handicap; which he won after a long chase of True Story. The six-year-old had an easy measure of Jaiswal`s heavily backed My Freedom (Chauhan).
