Sherlock prevails with a start to finish dash

By: Stay Thirsty   January 24 , 2018

Michael Eshwer trained Sherlock managed to pull off a start to finish win in the 1600 metres M Govindappa Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Wednesday`s Mysore races. Just like Mumbai imports all excelling and achieving bagful of wins after being relocated, this was Sherlock`s second win during the season.

Sherlock was backed to the exclusion of the rest, with the one possible threat being Tremendous who had to carry the burden of top weight having won twice back to back. Jockey Zervan took Sherlock on a start to finish mission and the progeny of Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed an uncontested lead in front and spurted clear in the final furlong to win easily. Tremendous threatened for a while in the straight but the weight as well the apprentice jockey`s inability to drive him out on an even keel came in the way of the top-weight posing a serious problem. Reanna finished on well to edge out Momotaro to get the third position.

Jockey Imran Chisty drove out Amaris to a fine win in the 1400 metres Bold Majesty Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Chisty brought Amaris into strong contention through a narrow gap that emerged between two horses in the run in for home. Thereafter, the progeny of Verenar quickened well to win comfortably. There was a cluster finish behind with Nikka and Malkia taking the next two slots on the frame. The speedy Tax Free who was drawn very wide finished with a rush to be a close fifth and his chances were undone by the outermost draw.

Michael Eshwer trained Salute had no problem in smashing the opposition in the 1200 metres B Khanna Memorial Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Salute stood out against the meek lot of opposition both by looks and the quality of preparation. Salute went to the front from the beginning and jockey Zervan had to merely guide the favourite for a resounding win. Black Horse and Gintoki were well spaced out in second and third positions.

Sajid Qureshi trained El Dorado had given sufficient indication of an early win and it materialized in the 1200 metres Sirsi Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Though Al Dorado was under pressure and rolled out of the rails, six-year-old gelding had enough lead and legs to scrape ahead of late-rallying Forest Queen in the hands of Ahsan Qureshi. Erebus was third. Another Sajid Qureshi ward Scorpene went down by a whisker in the lower division of the race. Scorpene shot ahead in the final furlong and had a good cushion. Favourite Little Brown Jug came home with a big effort and the fancied runner managed to win by the skin of his teeth in the final stride of the race. Pepper King too finished with a rattle to be an eye-catching third.

Lesser fancied Warlock from the stables of trainer Nataraj won the 1100 metres Himalayas Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Oceana put in a speedy display to lead the field into the final furlong before fading out. Warlock who was in chase of the front-runner got stronger to sail clear to win from late-finishing Golden Cruise and favourite Akimbo. Bobby trained Clovis justified the favouritism taking over the running within the first two furlongs and then stretching clear of the rest to record a handsome win in the lower division of the race. Andermatt took the second position staving off the late bid of Good Earth.

Feroz Khan trained Classic King won the 1400 metres Sankranti Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Classic King benefitted from the lead he had and despite being under pressure from Flash Time, just about managed to stay clear of the trouble. Anonymous who raced up with the field was always in a handy position but was unable to produce anything extra and ended up third.
