Kangra outstays the rest in Oaks on class

  January 26 , 2018

Sulaiman Attaollahi Kangra thrived on a mediocre opposition by winning the Gr 2 Bangalore Oaks, the feature event of Friday`s Bangalore races, accomplishing the task with a start to finish mission. Kangra towered over the opposition on sheer class and the only question mark was whether the progeny of Western Aristocrat could get the mile and half trip in the hands of jockey Sandesh who has been low on confidence ever since he came back in the saddle after a fall in the early part of the season at Mumbai. The question was answered in emphatic fashion with Kangra winning the race without coming under pressure at any stage of the race.

Barring Windsor Forest, none of those who were taking on Kangra had accomplishments to recommend their credentials. Though Windsor Forest was a classic winner, it has been time and again proved that the progeny of Phoenix Tower are endowed with speed but very little stamina especially for a trip like mile and half. The other runners in the fray would not have even made a lower category race competitive.

Sandesh had little hesitation in taking Kangra to the front and the fancied runner has always produced the best whenever she has been allowed to run freely in front, without anyone bothering her by cutting pace. Kangra enjoyed a healthy lead over Windsor Forest, Classical Dancer, Masquerade, Implicit Trust and Concept Win with Sedulous bringing up the rear with her jockey Arshad Alam literally going to sleep unmindful of the distance he had fallen behind vis-à-vis the rest who raced as a group.

Kangra enjoyed the uncontested lead and came in well clear of the rest. Kangra expanded the lead in the straight even as the others in the fray were trying to cover the leeway and retired home as a facile winner by a margin of over five lengths. Implicit Trust moved from way off the pace to finish second ahead of Sedulous who was woken up by the jockey when the cause had been lost by conceding so much of ground which any horse would be incapable of making up. Sedulous, despite a horrible ride by Arshad Alam who perhaps was tied down by the instructions did not realise that he had kept his horse too far behind for him to have any chance. Despite his horrendous ride, Sedulous ran on to finish third behind Kangra and Implicit Trust. Midway through the race, Masquerade broke down with a problem to the sesamoid and her jockey David Probert was tossed out from the saddle though without suffering any injury. Masquerade was later euthanized.

Prasanna Kumar trained Anantara looked outstanding in the 1200 metres Republic Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65 and was accorded the status being a firm favourite. Among the lesser lights in fray, Interesting seemed to have significant number of takers. Interesting who raced up with the field, took the command on turning for home and led till beaten in the closing yards of the race by Anantara who finished with a rattle thanks to the driving finish of jockey Srinath. Royal Serenity necked out Tzar to take the third position.

The 1400 metres Novice Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds looked tricky as one had to weigh debutants through their track work against horses which had the benefit of a race run. Satish Narredu Mr Handsome had this in ample measure and was backed ahead of debutants Astral Force and Indian Pharaoh. Mr Handsome who showed up prominently in the final furlong, quickened well to easily stave off the late bid of Astral Force. Full Bloom was third. Indian Pharaoh who did not get a strong start was also knocked out of any chance of making a mark by severe interference midway through the race.

Padmanabhan trained Balian has this knack of always finding one better and yet again, he found rank outsider Wind Striker from Azhar Ali`s yard playing a spoilsport in the 1600 metres S V Subramaniam Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Despite running after 180 days, he was backed strongly to win the race. Wind Striker who ran freely in front refused to budge his opposition in front and skipped clear beyond the reach of the rest. Though Balian finished with a strong effort, he still fell short and ended up second best yet again. High Admiral necked out Czar Rule and Summer Dawn to save place money.

The lack of quality runners at the top was once again highlighted by the fact that the nine-year-old Shivalik Star had a strong say in the 1200 metres Kempe Gowda Cup, a race for horses rated 75 and above. The accomplished veteran chased Side Winder into the straight before storming ahead for a comfortable win over the fancied duo of Life Awaits and Justice Angle. Sea Fairey`s run was too bad to be true and the six-year-old mare finished a dismal last despite coming into the race with back to back wins achieved at Hyderabad and Chennai.

Praveen Jesu trained Goodwill Warrior fought out a resolute battle with Strong Conviction before he got the nod in the dying moments of the 1400 metres Horanadu Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Find saved place money by necking out late-rallying Masters Glory. Top-weighted Granada produced a winning gallop in the final furlong to measure the front-running Wrekin to land the spoils in the lower division of the race. Hyderabad based jockey Sai Kiran was in the saddle. Emancipation finished late as is her wont to grab the third position ahead of Lassilo.

The 1100 metres Gulbarga Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class, saw one king-sized gamble failed to materialise narrowly while a pint-sized touch coming through in the form of the victory of Rosebrook. Sharat Kumar trained Pink Smile came in for sustained support while Rosebrook, though fancied, was allowed to run at big odds. Rosebrook who had the first run on her principal opponent in the final furlong, managed to stay put in front in the hands of apprentice jockey Darshan. Sai Kiran was at his aggressive best on Pink Smile who failed to collar the front-runner narrowly. Red Admiral who was also in betting consideration ran on late to finish third.
