Ayra`s Pet wins Republic Cup in a close finish

By: Goldie Boy   January 27 , 2018

Trainer Bharath Singh`s fancied speedster, Ayra`s Pet (Dashrath Singh-up), had a narrow measure of the Vikash Jaiswal-schooled long shot, Knighthood (Akash Rajput), in the 1,100m Republic Cup, on Saturday. An hour earlier, Dashrath had also guided Bharath`s even-money favourite, Alldero, to a cruising victory on an afternoon otherwise ruled by trainer Javed Khan who notched up a pricey treble in the nine-event card.

The afternoon also witnessed most of favourites performing like duds as form horses took a day off from the very start of the programme.
Ayra`s Pet was held back in the fourth berth as leads rapidly changed in the first half of the journey. However, the hot-footed One Man Army (app. P. Vikram) took over the charge from Knighthood when the field came into the view while the 9/2 shot Ayra`s Pet was in a workman-like chase. The close tussle for supremacy went almost to the wire as Dashrath just about managed to get something extra out of Ayra`s Pet, 50m from home to stump Knighthood at the post. One Man Army hung on to the remunerative slot.

Alldero`s graduation – from a sprint-win in his maiden start, to an easy mile victory, followed it by another triumph over the mile and a quarter, to bag the 2,000m S.S. Bala Memorial Cup -- has been a fairytale story and a systematic pursuit in quest for a Classic honour. However, the goodies have come late in career. Alldero`s last victory gives the trainer a faint hope to try his luck in the last Classic of the season, the Leger, in mid-March, when the potential stayer, Sana, will be a tired a filly, and visitors returned home after the Invitation Cup.

Vijay`s Magique (P.S. Chauhan) lapped up the 1,200m David Jacob Cup from Bagloni (Hindu Singh), justifying the topsy turvy form of the present crop of youngsters. The Air Support filly was a decent fourth behind Lancaster in her maiden outing.
But what went wrong with Bharath`s Oak Brook (Dashrath), who had placed ahead of Magique in the Lancaster`s race? Oak Brook totally disappointed in the race. The Net Whizz/Oakdale colt struggled to finish the course. He may bounce back to form, and also bring smiles back on his outstation owner, over an extended trip, during the Invitational weekend.

Javed`s Juggernaut started rolling from the very start of the day, thanks to James McKeown`s 14/10 favourite, Rising From Ashes (B. Mahesh), running erratically soon after the jump out and banging on the false rails to end his winning chances. Javed`s Bambini Festa (Shezad Khan), a suspect miler, won the race from Raunak Banerji`s Mythical Sunrise (Alford) after a close contest.

Javed`s western India acquisition, Tough Enough (app. Nikhil Naidu), finally, found his galloping shoes in the upper division of the 1,200m Treasure Land Handicap; which was an open-betting affair. To say that the 5/1 chance was lucky to have a wide opening in the home stretch for his apprentice to cruise through will be an under-statement. The top-weighted runner was simply too good for another heavily fancied 4/1 shot Happy Returns, a Manvendra Singh-trained charge, who came late on the scene in the hands of Hindu Singh.

In the lower division of the race, Javed`s another maiden charge, Malana (Dashrath), too, went kindly for him. Also a 4/1 open betting race, the Western Aristocrat filly was ridden in a long check but covered the ground impressively to have the measure of the other 9/2 shots Tibidado and Looking Good.
Trainer Shyam Habbu`s Roman Flame (app Naidu), a 7/2 chance, who has been knocking at the door, finally helped herself to victory in the 1,100m B. K. Poddar Cup, which she won from the two late finishers -- Viaskh`s rank outsider, Scarlet Emperor (app. S. Paswan), and Vijay`s 18/10 favourite, Levante (Chauhan). The Flame, tracked the speedy Born To Win (Jugnu Gurang) till about a furlong from home before making her winning run.

There is nothing to write home about the other winners like Aquaticaa (Ashhad Asbar), in the lower division of the Alvarada Handicap. The Daniel David-trained mare is on the up and she cashed in on her form. Trainer Sarfraz Khan`s Power Of Freedom (app R.S. Bhati), too, had been knocking at the door. Therefore, his victory, in the 1,400m King Wajid Ali Shah of Oudh Cup, hardly came as a surprise.
