Brahmachari bags feature on a day of long knives

By: Goldie Boy   February 2 , 2018

Trainer Javed Khan`s long shot, Brahmachari (Shezad Khan-up) took his 12 rivals by a total surprise in the 1,200m Metropolitan, Friday`s star attraction in the nine-event card. The afternoon also witnessed trainer Vijay Singh`s 6/1 chance, Alyssa (Dashrath Singh) having an easy measure of the field, including her hot favourite stable-mate, Advika (S. John), in the baby-race, the 1,400m Acorn Stakes. In fact, the afternoon was totally ruled by long knives, leaving race goers high and dry.

Brahmachari`s victory could not be faulted. The six-year-old was always up with the two leaders, Shivalik Story (Ashhad Asbar) and Shivalik Storm (B. Mahesh) – both from trainer James McKeown`s stable. The winner, a Chevalier son, was also travelling a double-handful; until the final furlong, and it was apparent that he would be the horse to beat while the rest in the open betting field was flat out.

Advika, in the baby race, was also going great guns, up-front, with Alyssa in hot-chase but her rhythm broke inside the final 200 metres and thus she went backwards.

The post-race story of slipped saddle of the Multidimensional daughter, however, could not be confirmed.
Raqs Sharqi, a 5/1 favourite, in an open-betting race, also went kindly for Javed Khan in the 1,600m J.J. Stephens Memorial Cup. The Royal Gladiator son has been maturing as a useful handicapper and his late stretch-run to overhaul the long time leader, Lochnivar (B.L. Paswan) was an impressive effort.
Trainer Arti Doctor`s Sweet Music (S. Zervan) was the other hot-favourite to fall. However, the expanding odds of the Dean`s Kitten son had served the notice in the betting that four-year-old may have reached his mark at the handicap and the 2,000m Deep Water Blues Handicap was not going to be an easy pick for him after winning over shorter trips in convincing manner.

Trainer Bharath Singh`s Shohin (Dashrath) won the race after a keen contest with Cocoanut (Hindu Singh) as Everybreakingwave dictated the terms, from the start, till about the distance-post.

The failure of McKeown`s even-money favourite, Novikov (Mahesh), in the curtain-raiser, the upper division of the 1,400m Aemilia Handicap, had served an early warning. The favourite was never in the race from the start. The race was picked up by trainer Raunak Banerji`s 6/1 shot Habiki (Ashhad) who raced in the mid-division early on but came with a strong run to have an easy measure of the long time leader, Zara Go Zara (app. P. Vikram), from Vikash Jaiswal`s stable.

Vijay`s Smith And Wesson (John) had provided some relief to the backers in the lower division of the Aemilia Handicap when the 5/2 favourite had taken the measure of Raunak`s rank-outsider, Dark Angle (Hindu). Things were back to square one in the following event, the division one of the 1,100m Alterio Handicap, which was claimed by another long shot, trainer Daniel David`s Red Bug (Russel Xaviers) who was brought with a spirited run, from the far back and on the wide out, to spoil all the good work done by John on Vijay`s another 5/2 favourite, Everglow.

David struck again, back-to-back, half-an-hour later when his charge, Bacaardi (Ashhad) decided to put his best foot forward in the lower division of the race. Bacaardi had an easy measure of trainer Deepak Karki`s Shape The Scape.

The victory of trainer Shafiq Khan`s long shot, Llotse (Ranidan Singh), brought a fitting-end to the afternoon`s proceeding. The seven-year-old mare came with an electrifying finish to beat trainer Harvinder Bath`s filly, Fiorelle (Shezad), in the 1,600m Star Angel Handicap.
