Steinlight warms up in time to win feature

By: Stay Thirsty   February 7 , 2018

Feroz Khan trained Steinlight who was at short odds, had to be fully ridden out to contain the challenge of Tax Free to win the 1600 metres Continual Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, the feature event of Wednesday`s Mysore races. The favourite got up in time and snatched the race from Tax Free who looked capable of holding on to the lead.

Steinlight had the best credentials to win and the short price offered on the progeny of Steinbeck appeared justified. However, the favourite did not have things easy. Tax Free who had a forward run over a shorter trip, was taken on a start to finish mission by jockey A R Pradeep and the front-runner was not inclined to give up easily. The front-runner had enough lead to land the spoils but Srinath`s aggressive push had the desired response and the favourite managed to prevail by half a length in the closing moments of the race. Arak ran on to finish third and has served notice of an early win.

Bobby trained Signor was well supported to win the 1200 metres Mysore Zoo Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Jockey Sai Kiran had Signor in a handy position till turning for home and then drove out the fancied runner vigorously to establish a winning lead. Though Golden Cruise and Catchy Charger came home with a good burst of speed, the favourite had enough cushion to sail through. Sharavanan trained 10 to 1 shot Speed Queen lived up to her name displaying immense speed form the start and staying clear of her opponents all the way to the post. Point held off Amazing who covered enormous ground to be a noteworthy third. Favourite Trevelyan was in touch with the front-runner but in the final furlong raced flat to go out of contention.

Machel Eshwer trained Rapunzel who had the benefit of a race run, smashed the opposition in the 1200 metres Sangam Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Rapunzel hit the front from the start and kept on expanding the lead all the way in the straight to eventually finish a distance ahead of Gintoki and King Star.

Rakesh trained Siddhani brought off a big upset in the 1400 metres Solitaire Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. After Even Money set the pace and weakened coming into the straight, Color Proof came into prominence, but the six-year-old mare failed to sustain her challenge and gave way to Siddhani who asserted her supremacy closer home to win at fancy odds. All In came from a long way back to occupy the third slot. One of the fancied runners Kings Smile dropped its jockey soon after jump out. There was a Stewards enquiry into the incident but everything was found to be in order.

Quite often the colour of money can be equated with the form of the horse. Zagato who had been waited with, received the kind of support in the ring in the 1200 metres Gerusoppa Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category, that the horse would take wings on the weight of the money. Sure enough, Zagato, in the hands of jockey S John, produced a powerful burst of speed in the final furlong to storm clear to record an easy win over Mysore Super Queen and Flaming Spear. The same trainer and jockey combination of Girinath and John were unsuccessful with a similar attempt in the lower division of the race. Jersey Bride was spiritedly back to oblige, and the favourite led in earnest, enjoying a good break over the rest in the final furlong. Jersey Bride appeared to have no threat when Dancing Blues descended from nowhere and produced a fantastic burst of speed on the wide outside to edge past the favourite in the dying moments of the race to bring off a big upset. Pepper King also showed some flourish when finishing third.
