Sir Cecil gives hint of exceptional class

  February 24 , 2018

Padmanabhan trained Sir Cecil gave glimpses of his undoubted class when he swamped the opposition in the Gr 3 Bangalore Juvenile Million, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of races held on Saturday. Sir Cecil won with jockey David Allan hardly having to move a muscle. The day`s races however were chaotic with long shots producing top drawer performances without a hint of imminent change in their capability, throwing punters into deep distress.

Sir Cecil`s debut was so impressive that his win in the race was taken for granted. He was quoted at unbackable odds. This full brother to Indian Derby winning Hall of Famer was held back in the rear as Play Safe led the field before packing up in the straight. New Moon then surged ahead but his lead was only as long as Sir Cecil allowed him to enjoy that privilege. The moment David eased the grip on the favourite, Sir Cecil moved with raking strides and stormed clear. David urged the horse to quicken in the furlong and the progeny of Win Legend showed amazing turn of foot, drawing clear to win as he pleased. What is remarkable about Sir Cecil is the fact that he is a big made specimen, blessed with a good temperament and a blistering turn of foot which should make him a frontline contender for the Summer Classics.

Parvathi Byramji trained China One had won against the run of expectations but the surprise winner had no takers in the 1200 metres Kanteerava Cup, a race for horses rated 60 and above even after the horse which finished behind him namely Royal Serenity had earlier in the day won by almost a distance. Justice Angel was widely reckoned to have the best chance to win. Regal Music who was bidding for a hat-trick had the first run on his opponents at the top of the straight as he surged ahead but began to slacken in the final furlong. China One came up with a late burst from way off the pace and flew past a host of horses who were battling for supremacy. China One won with a measure of comfort. In a cluster finish, Justice Angel managed to get the second spot with a late rally ahead of Tzar, Ungoogleable, Amazing Red and Regal Music.

The 1200 metres Srirangapattana Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35, was won by Neil Darashah trained Regency Girl. Apprentice jockey Chetan Gowda had little control on the horse as his horse ducked from the wide outside draw, causing the horses on the inside to be severely cramped. Luckily, the jockeys managed to stay put in the saddle despite their horses being thrown off their stride. The dangerous drift had a bearing as the heavily backed Perfect Horizon had to be checked by its rider and the horse lost momentum rather than the lengths that one could quantify. There was an objection by Sai Kiran who rode Perfect Horizon against Chetan Gowda for the interference, but it was overruled. The Stipes have a weird way of looking at things. Whether the horse had lot of time to recover should never be the argument. Even when a car breaks, it takes a while for it to recover speed and in the case of horses, it takes even longer. The Stipes should view the interference in the light of the potential danger it could have caused if the ones on the inside did not react swiftly and whether the horse deserved to be disqualified because of the dangerous nature of the inward drift. Unfortunately, our stipes are so poor that they have very little vision. In the same race, Wings of Fortune which had the best form finished down the field and one is not sure if the Stipes will even have a look at the poor run of the horse vis-à-vis its last effort. Racing in Bangalore can run without these Stipes because at the moment they only serve ornamental purpose. There is very little sincerity and homework in their efforts.

Narayan Gowda trained Princess Holly had finished 25 lengths behind in her last effort, but the horse brought about a shock win in the 1200 metres with a late flourish which was good enough to get the better of favourite Smile of Courage in the 1200 metres Shivanasamudra Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. One cannot understand this form fluctuation and those who were only playing in the tote would have kept away because the odds showing were too big for a stable whose horses fly only when the money comes on them. However, the fact of the matter was that the horse was well backed outside with the bookmakers, but one would be surprised if there is any enquiry into this improved performance.

Rajesh Narredu trained Royal Serenity showed amazing improvement in form when beating the field by a widening margin of nine lengths in the 1400 metres BARI Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Royal Serenity may have had credentials to win but the margin with which she hammered the opposition came as a surprise. Erdemir was second ahead of Ninon. The well supported Reference dropped his jockey soon after the start. M R Singh trained Princeazeem brought off a big upset in the lower division of the race when he charged home with a powerful run in the final furlong and then held off the late bid of Blue Blazer. Birchwood was third while favourite Iron Man went out of the reckoning after being prominent till the final 200 metres. Happy Dancing came in for big betting but the five-year-old was not spotted at the busy end.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Panama took the whole of final furlong to get the better of front-running Flicka in the 1100 metres Mercara Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Flicka led from the start, rolling over to the rails from the outside draw and had a good lead going into the final 300 metres. Panama went after the front-runner and it took a strong effort on the part of both jockey John and the horse to measure the front-runner in the closing moments of the race. Breaking Away ran on to finish third.

Favourite Love Is Life from trainer Imtiaz Khan`s stables had it easy in the 1600 metres Adichunchanagiri Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Jockey Arshad Alam had a fall when his horse Notos possibly clipped Only Prince. Only Prince ran on to be second ahead of late finishing Indian Brahmos.
