Punjabi Girl records comprehensive win

By: Tippu Sultan   February 26 , 2018

Donald Netto trained Punjabi Girl recorded a comprehensive win in the Gr 3 1400 metres Alcock Arabian Million, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Monday`s Hyderabad races. The progeny of Win Legend asserted her supremacy right from the word `go` and by the time the others warmed up to the task, she had already got the race sewn up a long way from home.

Realmoffantasy who had recorded back to back wins was made the favourite because of the presence of David Allan in the saddle as also the fact that the three-year-old was the progeny of Excellent Art. Punjabi Girl who had won twice in three starts was next in demand. In the hands of jockey Fergus Sweeney, Punjabi Girl showed a great deal of resolution and speed from the start as she broke into a good lead from the start and stormed clear at the top of the straight. Sensing the danger, David was hard at work on Realmoffantasy who could only bridge the lead to a shade less than four lengths at the finish. The progeny of Win Legend has been winning a bagful of races and the victory of Punjabi Girl was coming on the back of a brilliant win recorded by another progeny Sir Cecil. Mr Lily ran on to finish third. The much-hyped Alexander The Great once again disappointed.

From pointed to Satheesh trained Like Wise to have a bold show in the 1600 metres Telangana Race Horse Owners Association Trophy, race for horses rated 74 and above. However, the betting trend indicated that the race was an open affair as more than four horses were in serious betting. Like Wise who chased Mr Baahubali into the straight, overhauled the front-runner inside the final 350 metres and sped away for an effortless win. Ashwa Raftar gave a chase but it was clear the winner was too strong on the day. Naazaan got the third place ahead of Prospero. Mysore challenger Tremendous lost all his chances at the gate itself by being lethargic.

Akshay Kumar who rode Likewise to victory has literally dominated the winter season by making winning a habit. He drove out Lord Gift to a facile win in the 1200 metres Sir Bruce Plate (Div II), a race for horses rated 26 to 40. Lord Gift led from the start and produced a renewed burst of speed when under threat and skipped away to record an easy win over longshot Proud Warrior and Vijay`s Empress. The strong favourite Sarvatra like most favourites of trainer Sequeira was not spotted at the busy end. The upper division of the race saw equally well supported Thundering from the stables of Vittal Deshmukh put up a dismal show. The race was won by Princess Hina, with Akshay Kumar in the saddle who comfortably held off Ashka Ashka Ashka. Thundering was a disappointing third. The season has not gone on well for Vittal and his wards have shown inconsistency and more often than not, let down huge expectation.

Arjun Anne who was the surprise champion trainer of the season had a winner in the day`s opener itself through Vashishta who shot ahead in the final furlong and held off the late charge of favourite Bradfield College to win the 1600 metres Chaitanya Chakram Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Mark My Word was third.

Anant Vatsalya trained Kohinoor Legend came in for sustained betting in the 1400 metres Eturnagaram Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated up to 25. Kohinoor Legend was alert to the task, racing prominently and then showing urgency to take charge soon after turning for home. The favourite quickened well and established a winning lead which held the four-year-old gelding in good stead. Amaravathi made a late bid and came close to toppling the front-runner but the winning post came to the rescue of Kohinoor Legend. Cannon Fury was third. Satheesh trained New Comer brought off a big upset in the lower division of the race by staving off the bid of Top Sprint and Negress Princess. Favourite Good Taste shaped to make a serious bid but drifted out under pressure which hurt her chances.

Jockey Sweeney drove out Treasure Striker to get the better of a front-running Euro Zone close home in the 2000 metres Rock of Gibraltar Plate, a race for horses rated 42 to 62. Euro Zone shot ahead on turning for home with Treasure Striker in the chase. It took a strong ride by Sweeney to overhaul the front-runner who was relentless in front. Dahlois was third.
