Pearl City asserts superiority with a brilliant effort

  March 22 , 2018

Prithviraj trained Pearl City pulled off a resolute win in the 1200 metres Sprint Challenge Trophy, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of the concluding day`s races of the Bangalore Winter Season. Pearl City had failed over a slightly longer trip and the trainer chose to wait for this opportunity to run the mare over this suitable trip and this move paid ample dividends.

Lightning Strikes had finished a close third to Smile Stone and based on that run, he deserved to be fancied to win though the ever-unreliable Smile Stone was running on slightly better terms. However, the on-money quote was prohibitive and did not indicate value as he had a competitive set to take on. Castle Key led the way with Pearl City in a handy second position following by Lightning Strikes and Shivalik Star while Smile Stone was in his customary last position. Khayyam lost significant ground at the start and was never in the race. Rounding the final turn, Pearl City overtook Castle Key without having to be extended. Trevor then drove out the fancied runner to contain the challenge of Lightning Strikes who struggled to change gear as it were and had to be content with the second place. Smile Stone came up with a late rally to finish third ahead of Castle Key. Shivalik Star was showing the ill-effects of a long racing career when finishing dismally.

Lokanath trained Ultimate Warrior had been ambitiously campaigned in the Derby after a series of impressive performances in handicap races. If his Derby run were to be ignored, he had as good a chance as any in the 1600 metres Holi Feast Cup, a race for horses rated 45 to 65, but he was neglected in the betting and ran at big odds. Star Tracker who had run a forward race was fancied ahead of Cold Frontier who has proved to be an expensive failure. Apprentice jockey Darshan took Ultimate Warrior on a start to finish mission and the progeny of Serious Spender stayed put there. Though Psychic Warrior threw a semblance of a challenge under the strong riding of champion jockey Srinath, the front-runner had enough legs to reach the safety of the winning post. Glittering Gold was a faraway third. Star Tracker failed to show up at the busy end while Cold Frontier was lost in the crowd.

Prasanna Kumar who became the champion trainer of the season led in a winner through Tic Tac Ipsy Tipsy in the 1400 metres Kitty Bank Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Jockey Trevor Patel had the fancied runner lead all the way and though the filly looked vulnerable when Saint Petersburg essayed a strong challenge, the front-runner dug into her reserves and pulled away. Excellent Memory came up with a late charge to occupy the second place.

Habanero was strongly fancied to win the 1200 metres Silicon Valley Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35 and the favourite managed to oblige by grabbing a good lead in the final furlong and managed to thwart the late bid of Symphonica by half a length. Fine Barrister who led till overhauled by the eventual winner, managed to nose out Star Line to save place money. Pradeep Annaiah trained Optimisticapproach was backed to the exclusion of the rest with the price on the favourite being less than half money. Though the favourite gave a scare by taking a slow jump from the gates, jockey Vivek brought the horse into contention steadily improving the position. The four-year-old was so superior to the opposition that the jockey could pull up the horse on entering the final furlong. The horse has the ability to maintain the winning form. Imprimatur nosed out Blazing Faith to get the runner-up berth.

Four of the twelve horses declared to start in the 1100 metres Virajpet Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category were declared non-starters. Cashmere shaped to win when she shot ahead in the final furlong but had nothing left in the tank when Tic Tac Toe came home with a big effort from way off the pace. New Era was third.

Darius Byramji trained Nobel Sapphire had the lead going into the final furlong and grimly held on in the hands of jockey Anthony Raj to win the 1400 metres Wester Ghats Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Firing Line and First Step occupied the next two slots, returning rich dividends for place investment. Favourite Perfect King flattered to deceive.
