Dancing Dragon emerges the Maharaja

  July 8 , 2018

Nityanand trained Dancing Dragon maintained his amazing progress and graduated from handicap company to graded races league with a minimum of fuss while winning the Gr 2 Maharaja`s Cup, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Sunday`s Bangalore races. The Maharaja`s Cup is the only graded race in the country to be run over 2200 metres.

The Manjri Stud Farm produce Dancing Dragon had scored two spectacular wins during the season and the talk doing the rounds was that but for a niggle as a juvenile which delayed his debut, he would have made a mark in the classics as well. Dancing Dragon was seen at this best as a four-year-old and his progress has been swift and this was exemplified by the stylish win recorded by the progeny of Phoenix Tower.

The expectations were so high on Dancing Dragon that he was made the favourite ahead of Lady In Lace. Temerity was expected to fare better, and this was reflected in the odds as she was a clear third favourite. Ultimate Warrior took over the job of a pace-setter giving cover for Temerity to be raced in a handy second position alongside of Booker Jones. Sana was in about the sixth position while Lady In Lace raced behind her. Dancing Dragon was eased in the penultimate position by Trevor Patel.

Temerity was pushed to take over the running on turning for home but the Invitation Cup winner on this track two years ago did not show the kind of speed to storm clear of the rest. Soon there was a rush of horses pouncing on the front-runner. Lady In Lace was manoeuvred to get a striking position and she quickened well though she did hamper the progress of Sana on her inside. Dancing Dragon showed up on the wide outside with a powerful surge. Lady In Lace and Dancing Dragon went all out in the final moments of the race with the latter prevailing comfortably by a shade less than a length at the finish. Sana who was hampered again along the rails stayed put to take the third position. Temerity weakened to finish fourth.

Sandesh who rode Sana took an objection against Suraj who was astride the runner-up for bumping him in the final furlong and then again closing the gap along the rails closer home which prevented him getting the second position. Lady In Lace rolled on to Sana and again lugged in. The objection was overruled as the Stipes opined that Sandesh did not stop riding and thus it made no difference to the outcome of the result. Though the overruling of the objection was the right decision, the reasoning was wrong.

With the benefit of a good forward run, Dominic trained Wings of Desire was expected to go one better and win the 1200 metres Divine Light Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. In this sort of a scenario, either the horse with the best racing form wins or a debutant who shows better substance wins. This is what transpired. Wings of Desire went to the post at very cramped odds. Trevor Patel waited with the favourite in the second position till the final bend before pushing his horse to take charge. Wings of Desire led all the way but did not kick away. Debutant Lady Legend who warmed up to the task responded well to the driving finish of jockey Sandesh and collared the front-runner in the closing moments of the race. Candlelightqueen finished on well to be a suggestive third.

Gregory Sandhu trained Look Out brought off an upset in the 1400 metres Pendragon Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Apprentice jockey S Imran was persevering on Look Out who looked vulnerable to the onslaught of Touch Your Destiny in the straight but produced that bit extra to cling on to the lead in his start to finish bid. Favourite Noble Splendour made a rally along the rails, but the flourish did not promise much, and the third-placed effort was the best he could do under the circumstances. The race looked like a minefield as none of the horses had shown any significant form and this was amply highlighted by the fact that Look Out who had remained maiden in his 11 outings had finished 20 lengths behind the winner in his last outing!

In a nail-biting finish, Dominic trained Bora Bora won by the skin of her teeth, the 1100 metres R M Puttanna Memorial Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Bora Bora took a while to overtake pace-setter Emidio in the straight and but the time she could do so, there was a cluster of horses closing in. Lady Barrington almost headed Bora Bora but in the end, the bobbing of heads saw the latter prevail by the minutest of fractions thanks to the power-packed finish of Trevor Patel. Tarini was a close third.

Trevor and Suraj were involved in three close finishes during the day`s action and on all the occasions, the former emerged the better. Prasanna Kumar trained Mansuetude who produced sparkling acceleration inside the final furlong was hard-pressed to retain the lead by Gypsy, but Trevor pushed the favourite with all the resources at his command to extract a narrow win to take the 1200 metres P V Shetty Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 45 to 65. Tarini was third. The well supported Minver Rose ran out of gas at the top of the straight and finished in the ruck.
