Prospero wins on a day of upsets

By: Tippu Sultan   July 16 , 2018

Srinivas Reddy trained Prospero brought off a big upset in the 1200 metres Telangana Cup, a race for horses rated 74 and above, the feature event of opening day`s races of the Hyderabad Monsoon Season held on Monday. With horses returning to the racing track after a gap of five months, it was difficult to gauge the fitness of the horses and it came as no surprise that the winter form went topsy-turvy with upsets being par for the day.

Moon Dancer was widely reckoned to maintain his winning form with Breezeofthesouth who had won at Bangalore getting support based on the fact that the summer campaign would give him an advantage. But none of that worked out as Prospero who chased Paprika into the straight, asserted her supremacy in the straight and skipped away in the final furlong from Moon Dancer who struggled to pick up speed. Moondancer always attempted start to finish tactics but the change of tactics of holding him back didn`t work. Breezeofthesouth, with a late dash, displaced the favourite from the second position. It is possible that since Moon Dancer is bred to stay, he may require an extended trip to show his worth having won over shorter trips on sheer class. But this remains to be tried out.

Sequeira trained Nayadeep descended from nowhere to win the 1100 metres Welcome Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds. Southern State shaped to win as the filly appeared to have most of the runners covered and she had a comfortable lead going into the final 100 metres. However, Nayadeep showed tremendous acceleration, covered ground with menacing strides and overhauled the front-runner in the final moments of the race. Story Teller held off favourite Alexander The Great to save place money. Alexander The Great has repeatedly let down a legion of supporters who are plumping for him based more on hype than on substance. Laxman Singh trained Isabella who was making her debut, proved that she was cut above the opposition by slamming the opposition. The well-bred daughter of Excellent Art raced in a handy position as Secretary did the pace-setting. Isabella who had the benefit of summering at Bangalore and running in a mock race there, asserted her supremacy approaching the final furlong and skipped away to win by a widening margin of seven lengths. Favourite Tokyo Jam who was none too well placed ran on to take the second position ahead of Secretary.

Donald Netto trained Gorgeous Lady brought off an upset in the 1200 metres Tintinnabulation Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 42 to 62. Platinum led for the most part of the trip before weakening close home. Humaagar who was in earnest chase of the front-runner got into her stride home but unfortunately for her, Gorgeous Lady who came home with a terrific burst of speed managed to win by a whisker in the bobbing of heads. Platinum stayed on to be third. Newly licensed trainer, Mir Faiyaz Ali Khan had the distinction of leading in the first horse he saddled when Royal Dynamite waged a stiff battle for supremacy and prevailed in the lower division of the Tintinnabulation plate. Inside the final furlong, three horses were in contention with Mighty Swing, Royal Dynamite and Astra showing aggression. Mighty Swing fell back but Astra put up a dogged resistance. Royal Dynamite who looked vulnerable, pulled out that bit extra and won by a narrow margin.

Satyanarayana trained Starlight brought off a big upset in the 1100 metres Bhopal Reddy Memorial Plate, a race for horses rated 42 to 62. Arc of History who led from the start, shaped to win as she had a sizeable lead going into the final furlong. However, Starlight who was nowhere to be sighted, suddenly found wings and made rapid progress along the rails from way off the pace and came home with such a big effort that he easily overtook the fancied runner close home. Favourite Champion Bull was a tame third.

Satheesh trained Be Sure recorded a dramatic win in the 1100 metres Look of Eagles Plate, a race for horses rated 26 to 46. Favourite Rahil appeared to be on course to justifying the favouritism but Be Sure who produced a sparkling run down the final furlong, overwhelmed the front-runner in the shadow of the post. Wild Wings pipped Man Apart to get the third place.

Ravinder Singh trained Tough Sussex clung on to the lead to win the1200 metres Ramappa Plate, a race for horses rated up to 30. Tough Sussex went on a start to finish mission and closer home, was strongly pressed by Great Glory but the front-runner managed to reach the safety of the post. Dublin who was in chase of the eventual winner was a close third.
