Wild Fire obliges on a profitable day for Lagad

By: Frankel   July 26 , 2018

Narendra Lagad who is widely expected to keep his hold on the Pune racing season intact, had a profitable day saddling three well backed winners to keep his tally ticking. Wild Fire who had let down expectation on the opening week, had benefitted by the lung opener and gave a comprehensive beating to her rivals in the 1000 metres J E Hughes Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, the feature event of Thursday`s races.

The quality of the fare was not exciting with racing catering to lower class races. These type of races either turn out to be one-sided or become nightmares. With the bigger stables not warming up to the season, the situation is likely to continue for some more time. One has to put up with what is on offer and not crib about the lack of competitiveness of racing.

It is always difficult to go by the racing from of the horses which would have raced at Mumbai. Pune is a happy hunting ground for some who put all their efforts to win here while some others focus on the Mumbai season. Wild Fire who made no show at Mumbai, was obviously being targeted for the Pune season where she had won a host of races. The lung opener had done a world of good to Wild Fire who this time was offered at a better price in the ring because of the presence of Chaplin who performed well in the recently concluded Mumbai season. Jockey Dashrath Singh had no hesitation in taking Wild Fire to the front and the speedy customer enjoyed an uncontested run in front and checked in well clear of Queen Credible who as is her wont, made a rally from way off the pace. Flag Flying was third while God`s Own who had finished ahead of Wild Fire was a well beaten fourth.

Lagad`s strongly backed favourite Impala had no problem in obliging expectations in the 1000 metres Alley Cat Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Nextstar made a start to finish bid only to find Impala who chased her well into the straight, getting stronger close home. Yutaka rallied late but narrowly failed to get the second spot by a neck. C S Jodha drove out Altaf Hussain trained fancied runner Malavika to a comfortable win in the lower division of the race. After tracking the front-running Abraxas well into the straight, Malavika got stronger in the final furlong to settle the issue. Jigar was third. Favourite Buddyholly made no show and finished a miserable last.

Karthik Ganapathy`s Grand Accord was well prepared to have a bold show in the 1600 metres Grand Accord Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Waited patiently in about the third position, Grand Accord was set alight on turning for home and had no problem in getting the better of front-running Brabourne. Celestial Light ran on to finish third.

In keeping with the trend of well-backed horses not facing any threat in what was a day of one-sided contests, Lagad trained Arabian Storm also obliged expectations with ease in the 1200 metres Double Bull Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 4 to 30. Arabian Storm always had control of the race as the five-year-old took a stranglehold on the race in the homestretch. Xoxo was second while Tally Ho managed to nose out Vitesse for the third slot. Rehanullah Khan trained Eternal Dancer was the only aberration for the day, winning the lower division of the race at long odds. Another long shot Shakin Stevens had stolen a march with a good lead going into the final furlong, Eternal Dancer closed the gap with a resolute effort and manged to head the front-runner Shakin Stevens close home. The latter even lost the runner-up berth as Divine Spark rallied well to pip Shakin Stevens for the runner-up berth. Favourite Montana failed miserably.

Adhiraj Jodha also had a strongly backed winner through In It To Win It in the 1800 metres Sea Ruler Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Held back in the third or fourth position by jockey C S Jodha, In It To Win steadily got a firm grip on the race and in the final furlong, left the field stranded for an emphatic win. Kimberella occupied the second slot of ahead of Flying Dragon.
