Castlebridge makes it in Bangalore City Sprint

  July 28 , 2018

Bharath Singh trained Castlebridge who had disappointed as a firm favourite over a slightly extended trip of seven furlongs, made amends while claiming the Gr 3 Bangalore City Sprint Championship, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Saturday`s Bangalore races. Castlebridge who is a winner of the Mysore Derby in record time, was brought back to compete in the sprint but because of the class that he carries, it was not a hindrance for him to assert his supremacy despite coming back so much in distance.

Castlebridge was the firm favourite despite the fact that the race had a very competitive look about it. The speedy Lincoln who has been running game races but always finding it hard to sustain his blinding speed till the winning post, once again led from the start followed by Castlebridge who had to be restrained in second position. Tutankhamun, Accolade, Captain Courage and the rest followed behind. Lincoln battled on resolutely and held the till lead the final 100 metres but under a relentless pressure from Castlebridge, saw his reserves run out. Castlebridge then stormed ahead and had enough cushion when Accolade came up with a vastly improved performance when finishing a noteworthy second ahead of the long-time leader Lincoln. Tutankhamun who has been pretty inconsistent was a tame fourth. Accolade was a champion as a juvenile but had lost his way in the last year or so. He showed the spark of old when finishing second best.

Neil Darashah trained Royal Sceptre had seen better company than the one he was taking on in the 1600 metres Smart Chieftain Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Since apprentice jockey Chetan Gowda was declared to ride, Royal Sceptre ran at good odds as the lesser light hadn`t anything significant in his career in the saddle. Capricious who had made swift progress to this class was the favourite. Capricious led in earnest with Royal Sceptre in a handy position behind the pace-setter. Inside the final 300 metres, Royal Sceptre shot ahead and went away for an easy win over late-rallying Sea King. Capricious appeared to have lost his rhythm once he was overhauled by the eventual winner and faded out to be a tame third.

Warren Singh trained Speed Hawk was once a rousing performer in top handicap company but hadn`t done anything significant in recent times, having recorded his last win about 659 days back. As such, he was quoted at nourishing odds though the company he was taking on was not significant. No horse in the fray could be considered as a strong participant. Ahsan Qureshi took Speed Hawk on a start to finish mission and the veteran had no problem in staying put there and staving off the spirited bid of Harley Quinn. Favourite African Emperor made a late rally and could only succeed in snatching the third place from Tamara.

The quality of win recorded by Manohar trained Final Destiny last time out was such that a repeat win was very much on cards in the 1200 metres Baraloy Pate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. In keeping with the expectation, Final Destiny trounced the opposition with a powerful run down the final furlong in the hands of jockey Y S Srinath and had the field stranded to record a handsome win. Prazsky necked out High Admiral for the runner-up berth. Apprentice jockey Md Akram spurted the fancied Galileo immediately on turning for home and established a good lead over the rest. This made a difference to the outcome of the lower division of the race because Love For Life came home with a such powerful burst of speed that the front-runner was in danger of being overhauled. However, the winning post came a wee bit early for Love For Life.

The Sulaiman Attaollahi trained Into The Groove looked a cinch in the 1200 metres S M Ramakrishna Rao Memorial Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds especially after the last run where the filly had finished a close second to Snowdon. Backed to the exclusion of the rest, Into The Groove led all the way and skipped away from the field when Trevor rode out vigorously to win by a margin of over four lengths. Flat Out was second ahead of Rajveer.

Indian Brahmos had a good forward run last time out and over the more suitable trip of 1600 metres, the six-year-old gelding asserted his supremacy in the Supervite Plate. Ballerophon led into the straight before Indian Brahmos got into the act and zoomed past the front-runner to win by a margin of four lengths. Kings Kid was third.
