Akshay Kumar excels with five winners

By: Tippu Sultan   July 30 , 2018

C V G K Kishore La romance who was available at big odds, brought off an upset in the 1200 metres Ramakrishnam Raju Memorial Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 58 to 78, the feature event of Monday`s Hyderabad races. The day was marked by the victory of lesser fancied runners which were not considered to have a serious chance by the public who basically are guided by the odds prevailing in the ring. Needless to say, the trend of upsets is definitely having a bearing on the collections on the club operated pools as less money is recycled.

Jockey Akshay Kumar excelled in the saddle, booting home five winners in the card of eight events. Akshay Kumar has been a dominant jockey on the local circuit and he is better than the rest by a fair margin. And because of this, he is getting good patronage from most of the stables which is also responsible for his prolific performance. Apart from Phenomenal Cruise, he was also astride winners Riddari, Amazing Response, Barnabas and Great Glory.

La Romance was taken on a start to finish mission by Bangalore based jockey Arshad Alam and the lesser fancied runner not only held his ground well but skipped clear in the final furlong. Favourite Highly Acclaimed who stayed in touch with the front-runner, was overwhelmed in the closing stages of the race by a host of runners. Far Sight nosed out Batur who in turn staved off Celtic Queen to save place money. The lower division of the race was won by favourite Amazing Response from the stables of trainer R H Sequeira. After chasing Dream Girl well into the straight, Amazing Response asserted his supremacy in emphatic fashion, storming clear beyond the reach of the rest. Dream Girl stayed on to take the second position ahead of Palisades park who was hard-pressed to retain the third place but managed to do so by a neck, staving off O Ms Akilah.

Sequeira trained Special One descended from the skies as it were as the long shot came from nowhere to down another long shot City of Ayaansh to win the 1200 metres Set Alight Plate (Div I), a race for three-year-olds. Favourite Your Grace who was the on-money favourite failed to pick up any momentum and was a beaten cause long way from home. The favourite was a poor third. Classic Guy who did aggressive running in front-running weakened to finish fourth.

Donald Netto trained Phenomenal Cruise had the strong support from the betting public in the 1600 metres Major Mir Mujtaba Hussain Memorial Plate, a race for horses rated 42 to 62 and the four-year-old gelding did not disappoint though towards the close Durango threw a scare with a late flourish. After Treasure Striker led into the straight, Phenomenal Cruise who was in chase, took over the running inside the final furlong and skipped ahead. Durango was a few lengths adrift but closed the leeway with a rush only to find the favourite escape to victory. Treasure Striker stayed on to finish third.

After disappointing many a time as a fancied runner, Vittal Deshmukh trained Et Voici finally broke the ice, coming out of the maidens` ranks with a comfortable win in the 1600 metres Flowersoftheforest Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Et Voici came into strong contention in the final furlong though she did squeeze Shivalik Arrow out of the fray as the field on the inside got tightened when the eventual winner rolled in. Et Voici proved superior to the opposition as she had enough cushion to hold off the late rally of Rajneeti. Avantika was third ahead of Silver Dollar. This was the sixth career start for Et Voici. Favourite Wannawin was nowhere to be sighted.

Leo D`Silva trained Barnabas who had summered at Bangalore and even run in the Colts Championship Stakes, had no problem in tackling the opposition in the 1400 metres Regency Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. After tracking Classic Remark into the straight, Barnabas quickly established his superiority and stormed clear of the rest. Favourite Sublime took her own time to warm up but she did finish with a big effort to occupy the second place. Classic Remark was third.

Anant Vatsalya trained Great Glory held on resolutely to win the 1100 metres Vijays Conquer Plate, a race for horses rated up to 30. Though Great Glory was not well positioned at the top of the straight, under a vigorous effort from jockey Akshay Kumar, the fancied runner managed to storm ahead in the final 100 metres and managed to carry the lead to the post though she was under immense pressure to retain the initiative in the closing stages of the race. Hammer who made good ground along the rails was slightly squeezed for a clear run but still finished powerfully only to miss the berth narrowly. Aalishan also ran on strongly to take the third place ahead of Sefarina.
