Astral Flare scampers home in Independence Million

By: Frankel   August 15 , 2018

Vishal Gaikwad trained Astral Flare won the Mayor Babu Rao Sanas Memorial Independence Million, a race for horses rated 20 to 46, the feature event of Wednesday`s Pune races. The Independence Day Million had invariably produced an upset but this time out, though Astral Flash was not a favourite, she was considered strongly to win in what was an open type of race and as such, this year`s edition did not produce any shock result.

Artus took over the running within the first furlong and brought the field into view. Sandesh had Astral Flare a handy second and the lesser fancied runner assumed command at the top of the straight and established what turned out to be a winning lead. Star Bright came up with a late bid but found the front-runner reach the safety of the winning post before he could cover up the leeway. Lucky Luciano was third some lengths behind while the rest made no show.

Karthik Ganapathy trained Perfect Star who was ambitiously campaigned in the classics struck straightaway when raced in handicap company. Perfect Star had run a game second to Castlebridge in the Indian 2000 Guineas and that form was strong. However, the listless performance in other races was the reason why he was allowed to run at lucrative odds. In the Stars who had moved into this class through the handicap route was backed strongly to make a mark in this exalted company. In the event, Perfect Star who travelled a handy second into the straight skipped clear and stretched away for an easy win. Glyndebourne held off Excellent Gold to get the second position. In the Stars did not show any spark. Perfect Star should get some more opportunities in the handicap company before being switched to the terms race over suitable trips.

Last start winner Angels Touch had no problem in recording an encore in the 1200 metres Nana Raghunath Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 30 to 56. Backed with conviction to repeat, Angels Touch easily tackled the front-running Orion`s Belt in the straight and went away for a win by a widening margin of four lengths. Angels Touch is in good nick and looks capable of a hat-trick. Orion`s Belt held on grimly to take the third position by a neck over Golden Eclipse.

Pesi Shroff-trained Barbaresco came home with giant strides to win the 1400 metres Nawab and Begum Faiyaz Husain Memorial Trophy (Div I), a terms race for three-year-olds. Favourite Navigator led deep into the straight before being overwhelmed by Oriana but even the latter could not hold on as Barbaresco produced a scintillating run to zoom past these runners. While Navigator showed improvement, the one to catch the attention was Oriana who should strike before long. Shiraz Sunderji trained Notting Hill was the favourite for the lower division though his last run was nothing impressive to suggest an early win. Notting Hill had the lead till going into the furlong but his chances didn`t look bright because Merlot showed up on the wide outside with tremendous zest. Merlot sailed past the front-runner for an impressive win at long odds in the hands of jockey Yash Narredu in the lower division of the race. Dancing Hooves ran on to take the third position while Bitcoin finished a faraway fourth.

Shiraz Sunderji trained Yutaka rallied strongly along the rails to claim the 1200 metres True Elegance Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 4 to 30. Favourite Lesrel was in with a chance after Brave weakened after leading well into the straight but Yutaka changed the complexion of the race with a powerful surge which had the others stranded. Bay of Love came from a long way off the pace to edge out the favourite for the runner-up berth. S S Shah trained Xoxo proved too good in the lower division of the race skipping clear of the favourite Wabi Sabi on turning for home. Divine Spark saved place money be necking out Diwali Lights.

In a three horse finish, Altamash Ahmed trained Aberlour just about managed to win in the 1600 metres Unforgettable You Plate, a race for horses rated in the lowest category. Eiger`s Tiger made his bid from the word `go` but closer home was pressed by Arrecife and Aberlour. The last named got the nod in the closing stride of the race.
