Caprisca has it easy in Fair Haven Trophy

By: Frankel   August 19 , 2018

Imtiaz Sait trained Caprisca overwhelmed the opposition in the 2000 metres Fair Haven Trophy, a handicap race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Saturday`s Pune races. The favourite cruised into the lead in the stretch run and had no problem checking in well clear of the late-rallyingWinter Renaissance.

Caprisca had a been fair performer on this last track last year. The form and performance pointed to Caprisca`s success. Square Moon set a good pace with Trevor Patel easing the favourite in the third position. Caprisca covered ground in the straight with the jockey hardly having to move a muscle and then stormed clear in the final furlong for an easy win. Winter Renaissance came from a long way back to edge past the battling duo of Raees and Square Moon. Uncle Scrooge lost considerable ground at the start and was never in the race.

Pesi Shroff-trained Costa Brava slammed the opposition in the 1400 metres Panchshil Million, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Costa Brava was strongly fancied to win the race. Trevor had the favourite chase the speedy Slam Dunk into the straight before putting his horse in top gear. Costa Brave quickly established a big lead which was stretched to six by the time the four-year-old gelding crossed the winning post. About five horses finished in a cluster behind to dispute the minor placings. Forest Fairy held off Slam Dunk and Run Forest Run to get the runner-up berth.

Sanjay Kolse trained Pablo accounted for the opposition quite capably to win the 1200 metres Brunello Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Sandesh quickly had favourite Pablo overtake the front-running Lethal Steps on turning for home and had the race sewn up a long way from home. Courageous put in useful work when finishing on with a flourish to take the second position from the long-time leader. Courageous should strike before long on the basis of this suggestive run.

Pesi Shroff had a double for the day as the well-supported Star Aligned had no problem in landing the spoils in the 1600 metres Gaea Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Daughterofthesun attempted to win the hard way but in the stretch, she had no answer when the favourite swooped on her. Star Aligned then stretched away for a comfortable win. Daughterofthesun stayed on to take the second position while the rest headed by We Break The Rules were more than six lengths adrift.

Altaf Hussain trained Snow Blast brought off a big upset in the 1000 metres Thanda Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. In a race which a had an open look about, the relatively better fancied Furiosa led in earnest and had a useful lead going into the final furlong but her hopes were put paid by Snow Blast who burst out of the pack with 200 metres left in the race and collared the front-runner in the closing moments of the race. Smart Choice was third.

There appeared to be only two serious runners in the 2000 metres Flood of Fortune Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. After Romantic Eyes enjoyed her foray in front, favourite Aloha who had made significant progress from way off the pace, asserted her supremacy in the stretch run to win by a widening margin of six lengths. Silver Moon held off Dazzle N Daze to get the third position.
