Srinath excels on Sana in Idar Trophy

By: Frankel   August 31 , 2018

Jockey Y S Srinath`s determination and persistence ensured that Sana snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in the Gr 3 2400 metres Idar Gold Trophy, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Friday`s Pune races. With a furlong left in the race, Sana appeared to be a lost cause as she had considerable leeway to makeup but the driving finish of Srinath ensured that the favourite pulled it off by the proverbial whisker.

Vulcan made an aggressive bid to win the race by leading from the start with Selfie Star in close proximity followed by Winter Renaissance, Sana and Caprisca. Vulcan was not inclined to give up on entering the straight and thwarted the strong bid by Self Star all the way in the straight. Inside the final furlong, Sana had a few lengths to cover on the battling duo in the front and under a relentless ride by Srinath, the favourite responded well and inched closer and got the race in the waning yard of the race from Vulcan by a nose. Selfie Star was a close third.

The Adhiraj Singh Jodha trained In It to Win It was strongly backed along with last start winner Star Aligned to win the 2000 metres Yana Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. While Star Aligned flopped after bringing the field into the straight, In It to Win It who made a strong bid with a run on the wide outside, assumed command before the final furlong and sped away for an easy win. Sagittarius was second ahead of Gloriosus who edged out Star Aligned to save place money.

Pesi Shroff-trained Cavarozzi prevailed in an absorbing finish in the 1800 metres Mayor`s Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Lambretta made merry in front and had a useful break on entering the straight. However, in the closing stages of the race, a host of horses charged home. Cavarozzi on the wide outside managed to clinch the issue from fast-finishing Savage Attack, with Lambretta just about holding off favourite Red Carnation to get the third position.

Narendra Lagad trained Arabian Storm made a successful start to finish mission in the 1400 metres Glasnost Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Arabian Storm was not unduly pressured to keep the lead with Relentless Pursuit who was the nearest challenger making no impression. Towards the closing stages of the race, Dibaba gathered ground to snatch the second position from Relentless Pursuit. In the hands of newly licensed apprentice Peter, long shot Frosted from the stables of trainer Imtiaz Sait swamped the opposition in the lower division of the race. Frosted hit the front from the word `go` and the five-year-old mare had nobody in the race even chasing her shadow and won by a widening margin of six lengths. Eiger`s Tiger was second ahead of Fabio.

Lesser fancied Adele made swift progress approaching the final furlong and had everyone covered in the next one furlong and sped away for an easy in the 1000 metres Spearhead Plate, a race for horses rated 4 to 30. Jockey Imran Khan had an arm-chair ride on the Nazak Chenoy trainee. Romantic Warrior easily held off Brave to get the runner-up berth.
