Bobby trained Flying Show held off the more fancied opponents in an exciting four-horse finish to win the 1200 metres H H Sri Chamaraja Wadiyar Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 75 and above, the feature event of Wednesday`s Mysore races. Flying Show led all the way and just about lasted out to land the spoils to boost the growing confidence of apprentice jockey R N Darshan.
Bangalore challenger Regal Music enjoyed most support to pull it off, but his response came rather late in the day. Flying Show had always proved a tough customer whenever she enjoyed an uncontested lead. It was so as Darshan had Flying Show in front and though the lesser fancied runner drifted out under pressure because of the inexperience on the part of the jockey who persisted in using the whip on the right-hand side, the horse had enough cushion to cover up for any deficiency. Regal Music who had considerable leeway to cover in the straight flew home but had to be satisfied with the third slot as Natanza who was near proximity of the front-runner managed to hang on to the lead. Fire Glow was a close fourth.
Michael Eshwer trained London brought off a narrow win in the 1400 metres P Shanker Memorial Plate, a race for horses rated 60 and above. In a tightly handicapped field, it was difficult to predict any horse as being formidable with any degree of conviction. Bangalore challengers are generally considered superior to the local ones and it came as no surprise when Automatic was the choice. In the event, in a tight finish which saw several horses finish in a cluster, London held off a host of horses including Class Above, Automatic, Hot N Fire and Fair Game. Turf Magic who went on a start to finish mission, was overwhelmed in the end but finished in the sixth position less than two lengths off the winner.
Gregory Sandhu trained Navelrock was backed strongly to win the 1200 metres J H Foley Memorial Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Sandhu buys horses from other stables and tactically exploits their untapped potential. The name change may confuse but not the force of money in the ring. Navelrock ex Duke of Romance shot ahead of the pack with a furlong left in the race and had no problem in steering clear of the late-rallying Blue Blazer to land the spoils. Attorney General beat Gypsy to grab the third position. Lesser fancied Rare And Bold from the stables of trainer Ranjeet Shinde won the lower division of the race with a start to finish dash. Rare And Bold had a good cushion when Dream Star finished like a train to win the race at long odds. Favourite Reference lived up to the reputation of a big let-down.
Neil Darashah trained Free Port won the 1800 metres Kumaradhara Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45 in a comprehensive fashion. Favourite Play Safe attempted to win the hard way by taking the charge from the word `go` but failed to sustain her foray in front in the final furlong when Free Port swooped on her with a powerful burst. Free Port shook off her rival and won by a margin of over three lengths. Play Safe was second ahead of late-finishing Casey.
Bobby trained Praelector easily collared the front-running Humming Bird in the final furlong and recorded an easy win in the 1200 metres Paddock Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Dare The Don staved off the challenge of Beyond Thankful to save place money.
