Caprisca records easy win in Indian St Leger

By: Frankel   September 23 , 2018

Contrary to market expectations, Caprisca who had shown indifferent form over varying distances, relished the gruelling 2800 metres trip of the Gr 1 Indian St Leger, the feature event of Sunday`s Pune races and recorded a surprisingly easy win. Favourite Dancing Dragon failed to tackle the Leger trip effectively and the other strong contender Sana was beaten by the brilliance displayed by Caprisca on whom Sandesh excelled. It was jockey Sandesh`s day as he had a bagful of wins.

Veteran trainer Imtiaz who is inching his way to the 2000th mark could not have hoped for a better result as the success of Caprisca provided him with an Indian classic after a longish break. Interestingly, the first three finishers of the Leger all belonged to Usha Stud families. This was also the first classic recorded by owner K H Vachha.

Bangalore challenger Kambaku who had performed better than the times he was restrained, was taken on a start to finish mission by jockey Yash Narredu. Sagittarius raced in the second position ahead of Sana, Selfie-Star and Reunion. Dancing Dragon was eased in the penultimate position with Sandesh motionless on Caprisca in the last position. Srinath got busy on Sana on straightening for home and by the final furlong, had only one adversary to tackle in Reunion but no one expected the kind of brilliance shown by Caprisca who perhaps relished the relaxed way he was raced in the early. The progeny of Steinbeck came home with an aggressive effort which saw him sail away from Sana. Reunion nosed out Sana to get the third place while Dancing Dragon who failed to pick up his patented final dash, occupying the fourth position.

M K Jadhav trained Bushtops won like a better class horse, the 1400 metres Mohammed Rasheed Beg and Rahat Beg Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Jetfire who led the field into the straight shaped like a winner, but the complexion of the race changed when Sandesh brought Bushtops with a powerful run from way off the pace. The progeny of Archipenko covered the leeway with hardly any effort and swept past the front-runner with amassing ease. El Commandant ran on to finish third.

Sandesh was also successful on Governor General in the 1200 metres M P Jodha Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above. Holy Smoke took control of the proceedings inside the final furlong but was floored by the powerful finish of Governor General who won with a measure of comfort. Congressional took the third position while favourite Glyndebourne was not sighted at the busy end.

Narendra Lagad trained Mount Olympus brought off a big upset in the 1400 metres Janardhan Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Apprentice jockey Kunal Bunde took Mount Olympus on a start to finish and the long shot stayed out there. Favourite Charles Bridge tried hard but found the front-runner slipping away beyond the reach. Oriana was third.

Neeraj Rawal drove out Altamash Ahmed trained La Magnifique to an easy win in the 1200 metres C A Kuts Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. La Magnifique got a smooth run in the centre of the field and from a handy position, burst clear in the final furlong for an emphatic win. Queen Credible who was struck in the rear position, came home with a big effort but it was a herculean task to cover up the ground conceded. Miss Moneypenny nosed out Slam Dunk to get the third position.

Deepesh Narredu trained Excellent Ella was driven out to a narrow win over Gandalf by Yash Narredu in the 1600 metres D D Pillai Memorial Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 4 to 30. Yash took Excellent Ella on a start to finish mission and his passage to victory was not easy as Gandalf fought all the way in the final furlong but his forceful riding enabled the lesser fancied runner to prevail in the end by a short neck. Honourable Eyes was third. Favourite Eagleinthesky was not spotted at the busy end. Vijay Kasbekar trained Shivalik Skies recorded a remarkable win in the lower division of the race. Shivalik Skies graced the wrong end of the field till turning for home and though his jockey Prasad was all at sea, his horse showed maturity, took all the spaces and managed to pip Grand Chieftain at the post to land the spoils at big odds. Grand Chieftain barely managed to hold on to the second position from Gold Magic.
